Are you trying to guess if you have sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea occurs in its various forms while a person is is various stages of sleep, and regardless it keeps you from getting true REM "deep", kinda like just like you go into real deep sleep you stop breathing, this wakes you just enough and you start breathing again! Still asleep, alive but not that real good deep sleep BUT NOTE THIS DID REQUIRE THAT THE PERSON WAKE UP!
HAD THE PERSON BEEN SAY DRUNK WITH ALCOHOL OR IN A DEEP SLEEP ON DRUGS AND THIS CONDITION OF EXISTED HE WOULD NOT OF AWAKENED! SLEEP APNEA UNTREATED CAN MAKE A PERSON FEEL DEAD!
IF YOU HAVE BEEN TOLD YOU HAVE SLEEP APNEA GO TO A SLEEP LAB FOR EVALUATION BY A MEDICAL DOCTOR, IT COULD SAVE AND IMPROVE YOUR LIFE! YOU CANNOT DETERIMINE IT YOURSELF!
I DENIED THAT I HAD IT FOR YEARS! THAT IS UNTIL I STOPPED BREATHING WHILE IN AN OPERATION, NEARLY DID NOT RESTART! BET YOUR TAIL THIS HARD HEADED MULE BOTTOM WAS IN A SLEEP LAB WITHIN A COUPLE OF WEEKS!
THE SLEEP LAB WILL FIND ANY OTHER THINGS WHICH DISTURB YOUR SLEEP RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME ETC
I AM 61 YEARS YOUNG AND HAVE NEVER FELT BETTER IN MY LIFE!
NOW THE CPAP MACHINE TAKES ABOUT 2 WEEKS TO GET USE TO BEFORE YOU REALLY WILL NOT NOTICE IT AT NIGHT BUT IT IS REALLY WORTH THE EFFORT! THEY ARE VERY QUIET.
IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE SLEEP APNEA- FIND OUT!
IF YOU HAVE SLEEP APNEA, TREAT SLEEP APNEA LIKE THE DOCTOR ORDERED! LITERALLY IT WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE! SLEEP APNEA DOES KILL!
HAVE A GOOD DAY!

It can make you feel tired all day .. and possibly fall asleep because you are not resting well at night. Or you may have (not sure of the spelling ... ) Narcolepsy .. when a person just falls asleep for no reason.. it happens quickly .. you might be "out" for a few minutes and then wake up .. it would happen several times a day if it is that. Best thing to do is to get a professional sleep study done. Why ? Because if you do have sleep apnea .. your blood oxygen can go very low when you sleep and the possibility exisits of it causing stroke, heart attack or seizures. No.. this is NOT a joke. You probably need a C-PAP .. a simple machine that helps oxygen get into your system. See a doctor that specializes in sleep. Good Luck ! :)

That depends on what you mean by "uncontrollably" - you will probably nod off in front of the TV or while reading if you have sleep apnea, but you are not likely to fall asleep in the middle of an interesting conversation or while eating a meal. Narcolepsy will not be helped by a CPAP, but the symptoms of sleep apnea will. You really need to see a doctor and have a general health workup and probably a sleep study.
Neither apnea nor narcolepsy is anything to mess around with - both can kill you! Or others. My neighbor with narcolepsy fell asleep behind the wheel and hit a tree I had been standing beside a couple of minutes earlier - no one was injured, but it scared the daylights out of all of us!
Please see a doctor right away - you need medical help ASAP, and neither of these conditions will just go away without treatment. Please - make the appointment now, and tell the person on the other end of the phone that it can't wait until three months from next Thursday!

Being a chronic insomniac myself I feel his pain. I have found that by taking my shower at around 8:30-9:00 and keeping the tv off and the lights low helps my mind to wind down and there is a sleep aid called Mid Nite that helps, the directions say to allow a tablet to be dissolved under the tongue about a half hour before going to sleep. I have found that by taking one with some water as you would a normal pill an hour before bed is best. The other way tends to leave gritty chunks in your mouth and a weird fruity taste. It is all natural and does not leave you in a fog the next day, multiple tablets can be taken if needed without worry, but, the winding down at the end of the day is indeed the most effective. Especially if he stays away from the computer and just reads the newspaper and/or listens to some quiet music beforehand.

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!
1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.
2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.
The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.
After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net
Ohhh..and Good Luck!

No. Sleep apnea "occurs when you regularly stop breathing for 10 seconds or longer during sleep... The main symptoms of sleep apnea are loud snoring and feeling very sleepy during the day. " (Yahoo! Health) I believe what you're thinking of is often referred to as "narcolepsy" (see: http://health.yahoo.com/ency/healthwise/nord55;_ylt=An18dDKnfchN0z82fu5ZaBOmxbAB)
