Historically "motel" was short for "motor hotel," and it meant a one-story facility where you could drive your car right up to the door. Mostly hotels were in cities and motels along highways, and motels were usually simpler and cheaper. Now the terms are almost interchangable, with multi-story "motels" that you enter through a lobby just like a hotel and low-rise hotels that are indistinguishable from motels. In current practice it just depends on what the owner chooses to call it. Most motels have coffee makers and other "hotel" ammenities, and both are kept clean or they would be shut down by the health department.

MOTEL is a word that signifies a MOTOR-HOTEL... it came about in the USA as the automobile replaced the train as the primary means of transportation.

A Motel typically has an office rather than a lobby. It's rooms typically are accessed from outside rather than hallways.

A Motel was developed more for overnight stops... a Hotel may have guests staying for months at a time.

A motel is a structure that is one or two stories. It is where the motorist can pull up to the room and park in front of his door (or close to it). A hotel has numerous floors rising upwards. Hotels usually offer more service such as room service, concierge, etc. where a motel does not.

A hotel is a facility that you enter your room from the inside.. like in a indoor hallway.

A motel is a outside entry building.. open the door and there you are.. in the parking lot.

Generally hotels are prefered by guests because they are quieter and people feel more safe with the entry being enclosed.

Traditionally, a motel is a drive-in hotel; that is, you pull your car up to the door of the room you're staying in.

Hotels are big buildings with really nice bed, room services, bathrooms, etc. Motels are usually only two stories with smaller rooms and it's not that comfortable. i've only bee in hotels before because motels don't look comfortable or clean.
