The best thing you can do is to find a good Professional voice teacher. This person will be able to help you to develop a safety technique and will guide you to get the best from your voice.
don't try by your self, please don't try books or cd's to work alone. I know voice lessons can be expensive sometimes but is worth it.
If you try by your self, you can seriously hurt your vocal chords.
Bad habits, wrong use or abuse of your vocal instrument could cause serious damage and will take a long process to fix the problem.
Check my 360's blogs maybe you can find some answers.
Good Luck

I suggest to follow a good online course. You can find here the one that I did :
https://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=541
I can give you some tips but anyway I suggest to follow that course.
I believe that singing is an inbuilt part of the human mind and soul. For countless years the act of singing has been at the forefront of art, religion, social changes and of course love. We all have a desire to let flow with a burst of air and noise that lifts the soul and transports an emotive message be it from the screaming energetic rock anthem to the operatic tones of more studied precise singers.
We are not all born with a natural talent though but with practice anyone can take their instinctual desire to sing and become very good at it. Here are some tips for a better singing voice that can help you professionally, at the karaoke bar or even in the shower for your own enjoyment!
One mistake many singers make is to hold their breath while singing instead of letting the air flow through them. If you hold your breath tight you can never achieve a natural sound nor will you be able to achieve any great volume and it makes hitting the right tone harder as well. To combat this you must learn diaphragmatic breathing. This means you must breathe in to the lower part of your lungs by breathing deep and not shallow. This is not the same as belly breathing but should press out on your lower ribcage as you breathe in. There are many breathing exercises you can learn to help you achieve this such as lying down and placing a hand on the upper chest and a hand on the lower chest under the ribcage. When you breathe in the hand on the upper chest should not move and the hand on the lower chest should go up and down.
Mirrors are wonderful devices to help you improve your singing voice. By singing in front of a mirror you can watch your posture, your facial contortions and your breathing and determine what is and is not working. Try changing your posture and the way you use your face and mouth when you sing in front of a mirror and listen to the different sounds you make as you experiment. You will be surprised what straightening your back or opening your mouth wider can do to your voice once you see these things in the mirror.
I hope that the website I suggested could help you!

If you’re like most people who dream of becoming a world-class musician or just love to sing, your goal is simple: you want to overcome your vocal barriers. You want to take your singing ability to the highest level.
And you know that across the world, more and more people are taking their voice to that next level.
Superior Singing Method - http://superiorsingingmethods.info/376/Video-Tips.html
But why do some of these ‘lucky’ singers seem to have amazing ability, perfect control, pitch, agility, confidence, and a huge vocal range – while you might still be struggling to improve your singing voice and have a masterful singing voice?
This is what makes the difference between a world-class singer and an average singer…
It’s all about how you practice and train your voice. Most ‘vocal improvement’ systems and techniques just give you a set of vocal exercises with NO direction and leave you on your own to figure out how to actually sing.
But at Superior Singing Method, I train you with a form of active vocal improvement to spark your inner singing ability, improve every aspect of your singing voice – which means that you will start singing the way you always dreamed while gaining a masterful control over your voice…with amazing power and a range that will let you hit every note with ease and confidence.
You’ll do this through a set of time-tested and highly refined vocal exercises that come together to train every aspect of your singing voice: a voice where you can sing with amazing pitch, better agility, more power, improved resonance and tone, and impress anyone who hears you sing.
The Superior Singing Method is like having a personal vocal instructor showing you exactly how your voice works, and how to work with each muscle group in your voice to get the results you want.
In Just 5 Minutes A Day, You Could Start Singing With Incredible Control, Power, Pitch, And More Freedom Than You Ever Imagined - http://superiorsingingmethods.info/376/Video-Tips.html
Over 10,000 Singers – Including Professionals, Recording Artists and Even Total Beginners – Have Used The Superior Singing Method To Experience Vocal Breakthroughs!

there are some great books at the library that can explain the way the voice works and how to maintain it. you should also look at taking voice lessons. if you're looking for cheap lessons without obligation you can try the nearest university and take lessons from some voice majors. they may not be professionals yet but they won't charge as much and they can definitely be a help especially if you don't know anything about singing. good luck and happy singing!

It's very possible to learn to sing well. You just need to know the right methods. Learn here https://tinyurl.im/aH6ZU Singing teachers will cost money and can be expensive so they're not for everyone. Singing can be learned so it's not an "either you have it or you don't" kind of thing. Whether you sound like crap or you're decent, I recommend this singing course. It's one of the best methods to learn to sing well in a short amount of time. It's all about using efficient techniques that work.

Can you take voice lessons. 1)You need to learn the right breathing method, breathe from the diaphram. 2)You need good posture- stand with back to wall to make sure you are standing straight. 3)Open mouth wide to let sound come out, no one can sing with the mouth half closed- jaw dropped, chin down for high notes.Do practice exercises daily to warm up before singing. Never strain voice, or hollar a ball games, never sing in a car.Practice every day with songs that are not too high or too low.

Well, I also sing...the best things you can do: --Use it!! Like someone said above..."the throat is a muscle"...and it is. How do you strengthen muscles? You work them out. You want to be sure not to strain muscles so you don't lift more than you can, etc, so as not to strain or tear the muscle. With singing, you want to gradually build your voice up. You do warmups and try to breath and use your diaphragm and try to smooth your voice out. When singing, open up your entire body, breath into your feet, and try to bring out your tone through the mask of your face. Don't strain, train. If you cannot hit a note, or if your voice cracks...do not force it. Gently warm your voice up and smooth it out. Gently push it, but do not force it. In time, like learning to do splits, you will develop a smoother richer tone, with more flexibility and more range. Keep at it! :)

1. Watch your diet and fluid intake. Stay away from milk prior to singing. (I mean, milk's great! but not before singing.)
2. Watch your posture. Gotta use the whole machine, from the bottom of your gut to the top of your head.
3. Don't let your head move to accommodate high and low notes.
4. Exercise your voice with an accomanying pianist, or vocal instructor. Never strain. Never work your voice to the point of failure.

Figure out what you want your voice to sound like Style wise> then find a teacher who is trained in that specific genre of music, then be sure the teacher has good qualifications, then take lessons.
