All are from Matthew. I won't interpret them, first of all because they are crystal clear, and secondly because I would surely be accused of taking them out of context. **eye roll**

10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. ... A man's foes shall be they of his own household."

10:35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

19:29 And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.

This passage is both in Luke 12 and in Matthew 10 and Jesus is basically expressing a hard truth: The word of God will divide many for some will accept it while others will not only scorn it but will take great pains to oppose it much like a lot of people hanging around this topic..

Luke 12:51-53 is the scripture you're looking for. In it, Jesus explains that He didn't come to pacify mankind with peace, but to bring us to a decision of whether to serve God or our own fallen nature. It is not Jesus who divides, but rather the selfishness of the members of the family. When a person "exalts himself above the knowledge of God" (2 Corinthians 10:5) he/she operates from pride (like Archie Bunker). When one's selfish desires are placed above the welfare of the family - as with adultery, drunkeness, abuse, laziness, neglect - the family is put at risk and divided. Verses 42 and 43 explain it best, "Who then is that faithful and wise steward, who his lord shall make ruler over his household to give them their portion of meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing." Jesus was absolutely selfless and His example is what successful families follow.

The Scripture is Matthew 10:35.

Jesus talks about families being divided because of him. My interpretation is that because those who have faith in Jesus will become "objects of hatred" in the world (Matthew Chapter 9), this will include family members who disagree with other family members about his being the saviour and how to "exercise" faith in him.

I've personally seen this scenario. I know of ones who study the Bible and try to follow the example of the first century Christians, yet are mocked and persecuted by members of their own family, in addition to those outside their family.

I hope this helps!

What that verse means is that although Jesus came to give life, through Him also there will be persecution.

And when He talked about dividing families, He meant those who might be disowned by their family because of Him.

But all who suffer in His name shall bask in the love of His eternal salvation.
Our God is a God of healing and restores our souls, even if He puts us through persecutions. Because with persecution comes strength to depend on Him for all circumstances.

I think jesus means that he is here to shake things up. He intends for us to create our own path...make our own choices; instead of following along with everything that came before. This "division" or "fire" or "sword" that he speaks of is the impetus for collective human evolution and enlightenment.

The family is not literal.

Luke 12:51 Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division;

Looks to me like he is purposely telling people things that would cause division in their families. It goes on to say that it would cause division between fathers and sons, mothers and daughters... doesn't this go against the Honor thy mother and father?

Matt.10:35,36-"For I came to cause division, with a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a young wife against her mother in law,Indeed,a man's enemies will be persons of his own household."
Jesus was thus showing that to be one of his disciples make cause one to experience opposition from right within the family.
