Just read (http://healthandfitness.sympatico.msn.ca) that certain ADHD drugs can cause "agitation and hallucinations in children". I have been saying this for years (as I was a child with ADHD and was put on a number of drugs)- don't give kids drugs that are going to mess with inner working of their minds. This will always lead to problems!!! FYI- , "...Health Canada advised Canadians not to use Strattera, Dexedrine, Ritalin, Ritalin SR, Concerta, Attenade, Biphentin and Adderall XR if they have moderate to severe high blood pressure, heart disease or abnormalities, hardened arteries or an overactive thyroid gland."

EVERY therapeutic drug has unwanted side effects. The trick is to find the drug for each patient that causes a benefit that outweighs any side effects.

If the drugs caused you to hallucinate, that was too much of a side effect for you, but may not have happened in some other kid. My son took a drug that caused terrible dreams, but, since it kept his heart from quivering to a grinding halt, the benefits outweighed the side effects. Another of his drugs caused hearing loss in one ear. It also kept his lungs from filling up with fluid, drowning him. What do you think he chose? (Yes, he was a child, and yes, he had a choice.)

I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but there are kids who love their ADHD drug, because it helps them get along with the other kids and their families, and they'll be happy to have a few side effects if the overall result is a happier day-to-day life.

What you should have said is "don't give ME drugs that are going to mess with inner working of MY mind.
.

I heard that on the "National" the other night and I wasn't the least bit surprised. When I taught I wouldn't administer ritalin to kids in the class who needed it , said either the school nurse did or the parents as I was not familiar enough with side effects to feel comfortable giving them medication like ritalin.

It seems within the last 25 years or so adhd and add are a catch all for people who aren't exactly what parents and teachers think they should be.

Yes there are kids with genuine adhd and add and they can be helped to be functioning students and adults, my god son is one . However it is unwise to scare kids by saying they'll become bipolar or do other risky behaviours because they are adhd as in a previous question. I don't think I've seen that many studies tying them together.

There definitely needs to be more truly independent studies done on the long term and short term effects of the various drugs that are not tied to or sponsored by drug companies who manufacture and distribute them. That's a conflict of interest and good on Health Canada.
