many, you can have several types of cancer for most different tissues in your body.

You can have carcinoma, cancer arising from epithelium, or sarcoma, cancer arising from connective tissue. Any tissue in the body, lung, kidney, cervix, prostate, even muscles and the heart can have tumors of this type, which have specific names depending where they are. Some organs, such as the lungs, further classify tumors based on which cells are involved, and what the tumor cells look like.

You can have lymphoma or leukemias, which are pretty much the same thing, cancers of the white blood cells.

So to answer your question, many many more that can be counted or named. Cancer isn't really divided by 'types' in mayn cases, it's more like a spectrum, diagnosed by where it is, and the types of cells involved.

Hi there !

I feel, the question is not very clear !
The cancer is basically classified into different types based on :

1.the appearance
2.the cell of origin and also as
3.curability.
4.stage of diagnosis

appearance : whether its is ulcerative growth, invasive growth or proliferative growth.

cell of origin : whether it has originated from gland tissue, lining tissue , skin tissue etc etc,

curability : whether the growth belongs to the
benign type (harmless) or malignant type (dangerous type)

stage of diagnosis : whether the cancer is detected at stage I or stage II or stage III or IV.
More the stage, more dangerous and less treatable ! so prognosis will be bad !

Though more classifications are there, it is beyond the scope of this column. Most important ones are these..

There are over 100 different types of cancer.

Actually, recent genetic research indicates that no two cancers are alike (genetically). Each cancer cell can have thousands of different mutations in the DNA, so the likelyhood that two cancers will have the same combination of genetic damage is very, very, very small.

But, as cancers are currently named/classified, there are over 100 different ones.
