Basically what you are doing is correct. Remember when sea birds got covered in crude oil? well the RSPCA used washing up liquid. You may have to do it a few times, in between using fresh clean water, then as the oil is about gone, try a good dog shampoo and then conditioner. Watch your dogs eyes when you use washing up liquid, he or she won't be too pleased.
By repeating the process it should be fine, but don't forget the conditioner.
Good luck Jimmy

Im a veterinary nurse and you are doing the right thing wasing the dog in washing up liquid that is exactly what we use at work, oil is awful to get rid off just keep bathing him and soon it will come off but be careful of the dogs eyes as washing up liquid can irritant them.

You don't say what oil it was cooking oil or car oil??? All you can really do is keep washing the puppy and take it to the vet to be check out to make sure the puppy did not swallow any of the oil.
Good luck

Use dish wash liquid soap.( one that easy to hands) Add little oil to his food for a week after wash. Help his hair condition back. You are not going to get 100 % oil out. Don't wash him to much. It will damage the dog.
When the dog shedding, it will take care of itself.

Dawn and Joy both are great for this. They are supper gentle and are much much safer to use than any degreaser which would contain some very unsafe chemicals. I'd also follow up with a good moisturizing conditioner to help replenish the natural oils in the dog's skin. Please tell them to be very careful what they use since what they use can do more harm than the oil itself....that is if it is motor oil.

Awww. ... puppies are always into mischief.. but gotta love 'em.. My suggestion is to just continue bathing him,, making sure the soap is very mild, as repeated bathing will strip his skin of all natural oils, He needs those to repel ticks and fleas.. best bet is check with the vet for special instructions.. just a simple call in for advice.. otherwise just plenty of TLC..

In the Hunting area of wal.mart, they have a shampoo and bar soap that gets rid of oil better than dawn. They also have a product in the car section that is used for washing hands with that eliminates oil.

Yes! Tell them to take it to the vet. Washing up liquid may clear away the oil - but will also take natural oils out of its coat.
It will probably have a nasty rash that needs sorting out.
For heavens sake - get them to take it to the vet.

Most oils can be eliminated with Dawn dish soap. Or the generic brand of that. I would try that, but I agree I would wonder if the dog ate, or licked any off first.

You will need to have it shaved. This may cause the dog to go into mild shock. Oh yeah, what was your dog doing around that much oil? At best, dogs have the human intelligence of a three year old child. Would you let your 3 year old play around a pool of oil?
