Both are normal behaviors in dogs, and both are more excessive when they are bored. Chewing is actually easier to control then digging. Make sure your dog has plenty of things to chew on that are okay. The Kong toys are great so are the all natural tendons or other items by Red Barn. There are also sprays you can buy at the petstores like Bitter Apple or Natures Miracles chewing aide. Both sprays are sprayed on items you do not want chewed. If the dog does he gets an awfuls taste in his mouth. The sprays do not harm you dog or the items, he just learns that they are disgusting and looses interest. If you ctch him make sure you clarify its wrong and replace the item with something proper.
Digging is actually exremely fun dogs and once they start it is hard to stop. Dogs dig for several reasons, out of boredom ( most of the time) to find a cool spot, or to bury a item to save for later. You can try giving your dog more exercise and things to do. The more exercise they have the less energy they have to be destructive and they are also content. Give him something to play with like the Kong toys to keep him preoccupied. And the only other thing that stopped my digger is giving him somewhere to dig. I got him a small sandbox, filled it with sand or dirt and buried his toys. I encouraged him to dig there and only there. At times I would play with him in the box so he understood it was okay. If he went outside the box he was told no and brought to his area. More than anything dogs resort to these natural behaviors out of boredom so keep your dog busy.

I seriously would NOT follow the advice of the first person who answered. Well, dogs naturally like to chew and dig. Your best bet would be to GIVE them something to chew on and a place to dig, or maybe they are just restless because they don't have a job to do. Some dogs actually become quite docile if they have something to do on their spare time such as running cattle or sheep. Even sometimes something as simple as fetching the paper in the morning. I would look into the types of jobs your breed of dogs usually have and then try to teach them to your dogs. Hope this helps! ; )

I can't help with the chewing...I have an 8 mnth old lab that still drives me crazy. LOL
With the digging, I learned this on Animal Planet.....lay down chicken wire. Stake it down and cover it with some dirt. When your dog starts to dig he'll hit the wire and won't (hopefully) like the way the wire feels so he'll stop digging. You can lay grass seed and all down. After a while you won't even know its there. Good luck.

Puppies chew but usually outgrow it. Giving them chew toys and treats is the best way to control it. Digging is harder. They may be bored, hot (if they lay in the hole) or just acting on instinct. Exercise helps. Make sure to keep their nails clipped and filed dull.

Lots of chew toys and for the digging put their own poop in the hole that they are digging in that worked for our dog

There are toys you can get where you stuff food inside the toy like bacon and the dog will spend the hole day trying to get it out. So it doesn't do distructive damage to your home.
