You might be interested to hear about my little experiment.

I wanted to try digital, being a confirmed film photographer since 1961. I had a discount coupon from Heartland, and they were selling a 4 MP Fuji S3100 camera with EVF (electronic viewfinder, which is very important for me) for $130. To make a long story short- I got it, and the results were so good that within 15 days I bought myself a Nikon D50 SLR.

Right at this moment, you can get that camera for $124 on eBay and another one is at only $76 or so- the bidding is still on. That's the way to go. The camera comes with a small card, but you can upgrade that later.

And yes- you CANNOT see the difference between 4 MP and 5 MP even in a 5x7 print.

PS: The EVF was important for me because my pictures are very carefully composed right to the edges. However, if you plan to photograph children at play, running animals or fast-moving cars, then the EVF cannot "keep up" with them-in that case, you are better off with a simple optical viewfinder. And those are within the price range you specify too- on eBay.

Walmart has a digital camera for 59.97 (yes I work there) but its only a 4.1mp. Its under the brand name digital. Its not a bad little starter camera, and it takes a sd memory card. It must be a in store only special cause I just looked for it on the website and its not there.
