It use to be awkward, until you realize that the guy at the register cashing you out wishes he was in your shoes. Now I place the condoms on the register and scratch the price tag off so they have to call over the intercom for a price check!

i understand that this is for a psychology report but i think your question is unreasonably biased...you state guys only to answer the question but i think as many if not more girls buy condoms as they are also conscious not only of disease risk but they are the ones that can end up pregnant. I think that if your question should be brought out of the dark ages to incorporate that fact.
I do not feel shy/akward or uneasy when buying condoms...i am a girl...I am from England

Gone are the days when you had to ask the Druggist (Mr So-and-so) to reach behind the counter and produce condoms from some dark space he hides them in....
Today, the clerk at the mega-store could care less what she's scanning and tossing in your bag. No reason ever to feel awkward about buying such a common and responsible product.

i used to work in retail for a long time as a teenager.
i always thought it'd be funny when someone bought them to be like, hmmm. i've never seen this brand. have you used these before? how do they feel? Are they natural? Do they ever break?
personally though, you've got nothing to be ashamed of if you're having sex. these days if its that big of deal you can order them online and have them drop shipped to your door.
not just guys buy condoms, btw. its always good to have a "back -up" just in case the guy doesn't have one.
