For example, I need to give my friend my location so that she can pick me up. I know that you need to give two street names but I don't get it. This has always confused me!

The street runs long, so say you're on the 51st street, you need to give the second street names (or 51st street between xyz st and abc street), so that your friend will have an easier time to find your location. Cab drivers always ask for the cross street.

If your address is on a street, it's the avenue that is needed. If you are on 34th Street, it is helpful for the person if you tell them you are between 8th and 9th avenue... that narrows down your location to a one block radius instead of the breadth or length of NYC.

If you live on an Avenue, like 8th avenue, you would tell them the cross streets are 34th and 35th streets, so they would know to look on 8th Avenue just between those streets.

Hope this helps!

If you live at an address...
on a # street, you need to say between # Avenue and # Avenue. Ex. 213 East 21st Street (between 2nd Avenue and 3rd Avenue).

on a # avenue, you need to say between # Street and # Street. Ex. 500 Park Avenue (between 42nd Street and 43rd Street).

Fifth Avenue divides Manhattan into East side and West side.

In Manhattan the AVENUES run north & south (so they are very long) and STREETS run east & west. So, you would tell someone for example that you're on 17th Street between 2nd & 3rd Avenues, or 88th Street between First & Second Avenues.
