It's not that we suddenly change our character, Hopefully we grow up a little after we have a baby!! We have a motherly duty to do and that mother instinct sets in and I guess that does appear to change us, It's just the most important thing anymore at that point is that baby and nothing else!

Who wouldn't change after giving birth and becoming responsible for another human being? I'm a Dad and suddenly I found my priorities and outlook changing dramatically.....I don't think I can ever go back to being the old self, nor do I want to!

You should make your question a little clearer. In my opinion, women do not change their character. They just bring out what is already in them. There is more inside of a person, than you can see.

for myself, i had to overcome my shyness because i could see it was harming my first born's natural inclination to run to new people and opportunities. i couldn't hold him back with my weakness.

i also had to become much more assertive and speak up to people in defense of my son's interests - from making it clear to my spouse that the baby's needs came before grownups wants to not allowing peers to pressure me into returning to work despite their frantic efforts to telling a doctor he was handled an uncircumsized penis wrong!

alas, there are many many people who do not change their character when their first born arrives. you've seen some of the outcome in the Metro section of your local paper.

Parenthood is an enormous responsibility. In my opinion if a new parent doesn't change slightly, it isn't normal. Pregnancy can prepare you, but it's only a glimpse.

it's because during pregnancy women are treated and "babied" because they have a baby, but when that baby comes out, they are now number 2. and the baby becomes priority number one.
