I know that a person can survive longer in cold water because their body slows down but what I need to know what is slowing down...please be specific.

The heart slows it's beating, lowering pulse, and blood flow, and lowering the consumption of oxygen as a result of the decreased cardiovascular fuctions.

heart rate slows down thus slowing circulation. Also, all of the warm blood will go to the core of the body which is why arms, fingers, and legs don't work well in extreme cold.

i'm pretty sure that they can't survive longer in cold water. they would get hypothermia and die! the cold water would cause the body to go into shock and shut down.
