I used to be a Jehovah's Witness and I can tell you that many of these answers are wrong.

JW's do not take blood transfusions simply because their Governing Body says it's wrong, based on their interpretation of Scriptures that pertain to eating unbled meat.

If the GB would allow individual Witnesses to follow their own consciences, you can be assured that many Witnesses would accept blood transfusions of their own blood (which they are not presently permitted to do) and some would feel that in a life-threatening situation, even the blood of another person would also be permissible.

Many Witnesses are not aware that prior to the 1950's Jehovah's Witnesses beleived that immunizations were also a violation of God's law and one Watchtower-published magazine went so far as to say that thinking persons would rather have syphillis than to take an immunization. (I would tell you the exact date of the journal, but I don't have that information at hand. It was in the Consolation magazine (now named Awake!), sometime in the 1940's, I believe.)

Also, many Witnesses are not aware that the Watchtower in the past did not approve of organ transplants.

*** w67 11/15 p. 702 Questions from Readers ***

Humans were allowed by God to eat animal flesh and to sustain their human lives by taking the lives of animals, though they were not permitted to eat blood. Did this include eating human flesh, sustaining one’s life by means of the body or part of the body of another human, alive or dead? No! That would be cannibalism, a practice abhorrent to all civilized people

This view was changed in 1980.

Now that JW's are allowed to make their own decision about having organ transplants, it is rare to find a JW whose conscience wouldn't permit it. And when - hopefully - the day comes that the Watchtower Governing Body allows their members to follow their own consciences in matters pertaining to blood transfusions, there will be very few JW's who will sacrifice their life or the life of their loved one (the reality) for the sake of honoring literal blood (the symbol.)

Jehovah's Witnesses will not accept blood transfusions because of the Scripture at ACTS 15:29

However, transplants now can be performed without the use of blood therefore Jehovah’s Witnesses view organ transplant operations as a matter of individual conscience.

They accept medical care & immunizations etc

Their stand on blood is based on scripture

Hi Frank, It is Jehovah Witnesses they do not allow blood transfusions. The reason behind this is found in the old testament when Moses was given laws to govern the people of Israel during their time in the wilderness. This is part of the dietary laws. In that climate meat would have putrefied very quickly causing death and illness it will last longer if blood is removed hence the way that Jews and Arabs slaughter animals to this day. Somehow or other this has been transformed into it being wrong for people to have transfusions. Had I been a member of their church I would now be dead because I had to have 37 pints of blood when an operation went wrong! God Bless all blood donors!

You have it all wrong.
Jehovah's Witnesses seek medical attention, have operations, immunizations, etc, etc, just like every-one else who cares about their life. They don't permit blood transfusions because it's a Bible command from God. There are alternatives to blood and these are accepted by them. Those alternatives are safe as they are not derived from other humans and cannot have hidden contaminants. Would you have a blood transfusion when no-one can really guarantee they are free from aids, etc? I know I wouldn't!

I think those are the Jehova Witness's, they don't believe in Blood Transfusions with Real Blood for some reason. The Life is in the Blood?

there are scriptures forbidding the consumption of blood. I understand these to mean don't drink animal blood or human blood- not to consume as a food or source of nourishment. the Jehovah's Witnesses take this to mean any taking in of blood as in blood transfusions and transplants. I am sure it can be looked up, I have not taken the time but I have read that the JW's have wavered on this belief a few times- their Watchtower magazsine has eveidently contradicted itself on a few issues. The things they believe are not entirely biblical and often come from taking scriptures out of context.

Jehovah's Witnesses because the bible tells them not to take in blood because it is an abomination. They have translated this to mean they must reject blood transfusions. It isn't so - it means they must not eat food with blood in it, like blood sausage, jugged hare, etc etc.
