A Religion is a system of ideas, beliefs, and moralities.
Mythology is the study of stories within cultures.
You can say that Religions are influenced by Mythologies of that culture, but mythology is not equivelant to religion.

Since religion is programmed into the mind before it's fully developed and possesses logic and reason, some people never grow to develop them. If you live your life obsessed with boogey men and faries (or Satan and God), you probably don't possess much logic or reason aka: sold it out for the fanciful fairytale.
It's not to say people are stupid, or completely lacking. But to take a step back from society and realize that there is no God, and view society through these new eyes is to see a society that worships the Toothfairy, it just makes no sense - and it suddenly appears that most people are clinically insane. Many societies that lived before us had their gods, we view them as not being the "right" gods, what makes our gods any different? They had their mythology, we have ours. It's really quite simple & sad.

There is absolutely no difference between mythology and religion. Both are philosophies that provide answers to the unexplainable and provide moral boundaries for a society that would, through competition, quickly become amoral.

All the major religions use mythology to simplify their basic concept for the idiots that follow the religions. Mind control is the goal of all religions, period.

We all know the story about opinions. A freind of mine told me
his religion is true, and the beliefs of the Romans and Greeks
were myth.
I stated, "The Romans and Greeks said that the gods came down to women and had sexual relations, and men like Hercules were born. Doesn't it also say in Genesis that the sons of God
came down, had sexual relations with women, and mighty men
were born? So what's the difference?"

From my viewpoint as a mythology major...
People tend to take the word "mythology" as meaning "fictional", when it actually simply means stories about something. Therefore, every religion has a mythology. That's pretty much it.

Real religion is the relationship between man and God. All the rest , dogmas , diet , sartorial imperatives , saints , holidays etc, is mythology.

The difference depends on which side of the line you live on.
