Get a sourdough round, cut off the top, take out the bread inside, and save. Once you have a cavity, fill the cavity with chili, or clam chowder, or spinach dip. Use your leftover bread crumbs for dipping.

Purchase a bag of pizza dough at the supermarket or bakery, roll out dough large enough to fit over a stainless steel bowl that is turned upside down, but don't roll it too thin. Be careful not to have any holes in dough. Cover the whole bottom (rounded part) of the stainless bowl with olive oil and carefully ease the dough over it being sure to cover edges of bowl. It's a good idea to let the dough sit for ten minutes before putting on bowl. Place bowl with dough, open side DOWN on an oiled cookie sheet, and bake on 2nd shelf from top in a preheated oven at 400 degrees for about 10 minutes. PLEASE WATCH THAT IT DOESN'T BURN. Remove from oven and let cool about 10 - 15 minutes before CAREFULLY removing bread bowl from the bowl. This bread bowl is especially good when filled with salads. Enjoy!

Use dough for french bread but bake with a bowl of water in the oven and try for a good thick dense crust. It needs to hold together with the moisture and weight of what you put in it. Make sure you have good hard bread flour and work it a little extra to develop the gluten well. most bread is to soft to hold together. If you are buying you should be looking for buns or breads with thick and tough crusts, not necessary hard crunchy but thick chewey tough.

I've had miserable luck making bread bowls. So I get one from the store and fill it with whatever after hollowing it out.

Baking is sort of a lost art, I'm trying to get better though!
