Muslims pray more times a day than just about any other religion, leaving precious little time for anything else. This explains the lack of personal grooming and, to answer your question, this is why they let their beards grow. Most Muslims are of middle-eastern descent, and are extremely hairy people, so this really frees up time for prayer.

In general, Muslim men are to have beards. See:

One has to remember that like Judaism, Islam arose in the Middle East among Semitic people. And Semitic men tend to be heavily bearded and hairy. I suspect the religious call for bearded males originally came from the cultural traditions of Arabs, and thus were passed on to other non-Arab peoples who converted to Islam.

there is a statement in the hadith or the traditions of the prophet that said there was this one follower of the prophet who shaved his beard and thus was questioned by the prophet as to why since he saw good spirits clinging there.
Well, if know something about climate adaptations in the desert. it is best to have a beard as it protects the man from the heat of the day and the chills of the night. The shaving off of body hair has something to do with physical hygiene and cleanliness. It's even quite sexy, don't you think?

Good question worded badly. I myself do not grow a beard. I own a Gillette mach 4 razor, which if I am correct, is not a prohibited item to own in Islam. It is known as 'Sunnat' to do anything the prophet Mohammad (pbuh)may have done, remember this is not compulsory, you are free to choose.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was known to have kept a beard, so some Muslim men try to do the same. It is not compulsory in Islam. They're just trying to copy someone they look up to as a sign of adoration.

It's kind of like guys getting mohawks after David Beckham styled it. Or, girls bleaching their hair blonde to look like Paris Hilton.

*** In response to 'Schmod's answer below... only 20% of the world's Muslim population are Arabs, so the majority of Muslims are actually non Arabs - e.g. Indians, Malays, etc.
