There's a sad new trend in America: drinking "mocktails" instead of actual alcoholic beverages.

"Mocktails take out the alcohol, but leave in refreshing flavors that celebrate the season," the Seattle Times reported glumly on Wednesday.

While there's little to celebrate with a prohibition drink missing the all-important booze, health-addict Americans (the modern world's fattest, sickest people) are lining up to buy ingredients for cocktails minus the whole reason for having a cocktail.

The newspaper describes a process based on fraud: "According to Sharon Tyler Herbst, author of 'The Ultimate Liquor-Free Drink Guide,' the key to serving a great drink is to keep everything cold. First assemble a fun collection of glasses."

Glasses aren't "fun" without booze.

"Dip rims in water or fruit juice, or rub the rim with a citrus wedge," the newspaper continues. "Pour coarse salt, granulated sugar or even colored decorating sugar into a saucer and dip the moistened rim."

Great for toddlers, perhaps, but the whole "mocktail" movement is a slap in the face to those who have perfected the art of making wine, beer and spirits -- not to mention the skilled bartenders who can whip up a tasty concoction with humble ingredients such as well whiskey, generic cola, CostCo jarred cherries and dubious ice.

As discerning drinkers around the world know all too well, the creation of a proper cocktail can mean the difference between a workaday flop and a visionary success.

The poet/songwriter Leonard Cohen described a unique cocktail he created and prepared for musicians who played on his legendary album "The Future":

"I prepared a lot of Red Needles. That's a cocktail I invented in Needles, California, in 1976. It consists of tequila and cranberry juice and Sprite and fresh cut fruit. I prepared pitchers of this cocktail for the musicians and we couldn't stop playing; most of the takes are 25 minutes long, and we kept this one because it's eight minutes long. I did fall down in it, that's where the guitar solo occurs. It was a very exuberant, passionate evening, and several musicians told me it was the happiest time they ever spent in a recording studio."

Mocktail is a term I saw for the first time today. We always called them "virgin" drinks (without alcohol).
