Do you think that some men should maybe lower their standards slightly and hit on lower caliber women to lessen the chance of this happening?

From a logical point of view it would make sense to approach what you think is the best you can get. After all, why settle for less? The question that could be asked is "Do men subconsciously pick women who may be deemed 'easy' by his standards?" the opposite of a hard to get woman.

Sheez, try consciously attracted. Deep voices can practically make me swoon. And yeah, it's a totally superficial generalization. I think stuff like that is just a natural result of sexual difference, a synergy of the two facts 1) [straight]women are attracted to men and 2) men tend to have deeper voices. There isn't anything intelligent you can say about what deep voices "signal" to women, nor about what high voices "signal" to men. Too many cultural assumptions would be involved. They just point to sexual difference, which can be a source of arousal for its own sake.

How do you know the "caliber" of the person you're trying to talk to if you know nothing about them? It sounds like a snotty attitude is more the reason that "some men" are shot down than who they pick to hit on.

It does seem like men try to aim as high as they can. Men want hot chicks. But just like women, men need to keep their eyes open and consider all options, not necessarily lower their standards.
