That is because there are bugs in trees so the woodpecker has to peck a hole in the tree so they can get to them. D'oh! Lol. Jk. Just dont pay attention to what the little cartoons say. Watch some Animal Planet, ok? :0 ) Hope this helps. C ya. Linzi.

Well just in case you are not having a luagh at our expense its because when they tap the wood it takes off small pieces in order that they can get creepy crawlies like wood lice etc to eat, But i know what you mean i walk down out local woods & it sounds like they are really laying into them, I mean is there a sound when a tree falls & no-one is there to hear it

Woodpeckers don't peck for wood...they peck to get insects that live in the wood.

thats how they eat,they'll find a bug infected usually dieing tree's and peck out holes to eat the bug's,ant's whatever

they make burrows in trees to build a nest, and I think they eat little bugs from in the tree bark
