I am a petite woman with custom clubs and I have noticed that my friends who are all over 5'7" can hit the ball longer and higher than I can (they can hit 150 - 200 yards yet I am lucky to get 75 - 100). I understand that I have a different swing plane but would this affect the distance or is it something else?

I'm 6' tall and am one of the longer ball strikers among ladies my age in my area, but there are many much shorter than I who hit farther...some a LOT farther and are 12" shorter!!! It has to do with timing and how much coil and turn through the ball they make.

I think the arc of my swing is very long comparitively, so it takes more strength and speed to achieve the same thing a shorter person does...if you tied a button onto a piece of thread you would see it in action - swing the button in a circle with the thread - the smaller the circle the faster the button goes, the more thread you let out, the circle gets bigger and the button travels slower. That's just one part of it, but it tells you that height isn't everything!

All other things being equal, centrifugal force determines the speed of the cub head. The longer the arc the faster the speed.

That being said, you should not be hitting the ball half as far as your friends. One of the longest long ball hitters is under 6 feet. The others are around 6'5". 5'10" Jack Nicklaus always outdrove 6'5" George Archer. If you work on strengthening your legs, arms, and body and increasing your swing speed, you could hit the ball farther than your friends. Remember to smoothly swing the club faster through the ball. Don't try to hit the ball harder.

Not exactly positive but I'd assume taller people have a longer range of motion to allow for a stonger swing since they are taller from the ground and likely have longer arms.

Yes and No. Generally, the bigger you are the stronger you get, and with same technique, the stronger (bigger) person should hit longer.

But, see Ian Woosnam, (he's just a boy), but he got quite good distance from tee.. Er, he was a boxer before...

distance equates to club head speed and nothing else

I dont think height has anything to do with it. I think it is flexibility.
