Why is "does" used in the first sentence and not in the second sentence. Thanks.

This is an interesting question.

I don't know what a grammarian would call this technically, but there is clearly an important difference in the two sentences.

Suppose the second sentence was "How many people does the bus fit?" meaning, how many can get on the bus at one time... in that case, the question is about the bus, not about the people. In the original question, the first example is about "it" not about the pounds.

I would like to see what an English grammar teacher says about this....

Well I quite agree.
"Why is "does" used in 1'st ex."
Because it was Saturday
"and not in 2nd"
Because it is now Sunday.
"How many pounds does it weigh vs How many people use the bus."
4.
Carry the 3.
"Why is "does" used in the first sentence and not in the second sentence."
See above.
Thanks
No probs.

What the hell are you trying to say? Do you think it should be "How many people does the bus?" Good grief, I can't figure out what your problem is.
