One piece with the criss-crossing straps across the back. And make sure it FITS! You would be surprised at how many people cannot fit a bathing suit on their child....

I had this issue this past summer with my 7yr old. She is tall and skinny and so finding a suit with a good fit was hard. I would try all kinds and do what feels right once you see it on her. For my girl, she ended up with a tank top/bikini bottom and then 2 one piece suits that all covered her well.

a modest 2 piece. not skimpy! 7 is way too young for some of the designs that are out there, marketed for that age group. but 2 piece is easier for changing and bathroom than 1 piece

what kind of clothes does she like to wear. short tops and shorts or long shirts and pants.

if she likes short tops, she will probably like the bikini style. If not then a one piece.

one piece with the straps that cross in the back. (don't fall off their shoulders all the time!)

Anything that she likes that doesn't yell tramp or Britney Spears. The crossed straps is a good idea.

please try to get one that covers a lot. There are some two pieces that are cute which still cover. Please don't get her one of those skimpy looking ones, they look kind of cute on them but it gets them used to wearing skimpy looking things and it's a road you don't want to cross yet.
Good luck
