Two popular methods for catching minnows are by the use of a casting net, cast at a school of minnows then retrieved, or by using a baited minnow trap.

You should be able to purchase either online at a tackle/fishing supply dealer.

How To Catch Minnows

I use a minnow siene, each state has its own laws but it can be up to 40 feet in length I believe in WI. You go at night or early morning and look for schools along shore then drag the siene from behind them towards shore. The only problem is you need 2 people to do so. You can catch many different bait species this way. Instead of spending a bunch on a net Walmart has netting fabric in the crafts dept and it is really cheap. It lasts a few trips.

a minnow net or a minnow trap. a minnow trap is like a wire mesh tube with funnel shaped ends pointing into it. Bait with bread. A minnow net can be of several different styles. It can be like a butterfly net and used like a dip net, It can be a large square net again as a dip net but worked straight up and down with a pole (lower to the bottom, throw some bread over it and when there are lots of fish lift straight up. the net will sag and bag down trapping the fishes), or you could just chase around and try to catch them in your hands.

I bought a minnow trap at WALMART. the instructions said to bait it with bread. I did this on 3 occasions with no success then, I went to infisherman.com
they said to use onions. it worked. I put out the trap with, sliced onions the night before My fishing trip and, usually catch more than I need. I would get a minnow trap.

A minnow net

Easy! Get a minnow net (they sell them just about everywhere), or any net will do (as long as the fish don't go between the holes). Place the net at the bottom of shallow water, and then place bread crumbs on top of the water to get the fish to swim over the net, then raise the net and bammo you've caught a whole bunch.

Well if you don't have a metal minnow catcher, the buy a butterfly net. Put some bread crumbs or worms in the net, and when the minnows swim in, lift your net.

You gotta be really fast and an excellent swimmer to catch those little buggers, dive in the water clothes and all, then twirl around as fast as you can several times with your hands cupped and while yelling as loud as you can, "Hey look at me trying to catch minnows!" After 30 seconds or so you should catch at least one or two, repeat the procedure until you've caught an ample supply, and don't worry if you're approached by a police officer or park ranger with odd looks on their faces, they'll know exactly how to handle the situation;) LOL Good Luck!
