My green card will expire in 2 years. I want to apply for citizenship. How long does this process take? Can I do this on my own or should I do this with a lawyer?

You can do it on your own. Go to the Embassy and start right away. I've seen it take up to a year so start early. Its better if you get it earlier than having your green card expire and not received your citizenship.

U can apply for citizenship and yes it is a long.drawn out process. Mountains of paperwork! there is a fee to file each form. The good news is that if you have a brain, then you can do it yourself. You my want to contact an organization called Catholic Charities. They will have an office that keeps all the forms on hand and will go through all the steps fo paperwork with you. They will tell you the order in which you need to submitt each form. In return, all they ask is for you to give a donation. No set amount,..but you will find that it is well worth it considering the amount of money will save by not needing to pay a lawyer. I know because I did this for my husband. He will eligiblr for citizenship in 2007.

Good Luck to you!

You can always renew your green card. If you want to apply for citizenship, here is the link to the form

http://www.uscis.gov/graphics/formsfee/forms/n-400.htm

You can download it. You can do it yourself. It is very straight-forward. Of course, if you have had some problems or if there are some issues, you may have to have a lawyer.

As far as the amount of time is concerned it depends on the area and the number of people applying. They may post the status on the web site www.uscis.gov.

Congratulations on your decision to become a citizen. Welcome aboard!!! :)

please don't seek the help of an attorney unless you are a convicted felon. if not don't waste your money filing for a new green card if you plan on applying for us citizenship. put the money toward the N400 application and you will have the interview within 3-6 months. then you can aply for an us passport.

application and fee can be found on uscis.gov
