Kidney stones are painful for several reasons, the primary one being extreme spasm of the ureter (the long tube between kidney and bladder) through which the stone must pass if it leaves the kidney. The stone produces irritation and spasm, and if it is of any significant size, that will cause more pain via stretching of the smooth muscle. Stones in the kidney itself are usually discovered incidentally; their mere presence isn't what causes the pain. There are different types of kidney stones; some can be helped by dietary changes, whereas other types are related to your genetics. Staying well hydrated helps prevent the crystals which are the foundation of some types of stones from sticking to the inside of the urinary tract.

Kidney stones are somewhat like snowflakes - no 2 are alike. But the prevailing shape is a sphere with lots of pointed barbs or protrusions sticking out in all directions - and when the tissue of the kidney moves, you feel it!

Prevention varies from person to person, depending on how your particular body chemistry actually functions.

I got mine because I had the bad sense to start taking vitamins at night - and, at lower metabolism, the body didn't eliminate the chemicals, leaving them to accumulate in the kidney.

Basically you prevent them by drinking the 10 glasses of water per day all the professionals say you should. The next thing you can do is to limit the size of the dinner you eat - much of that accumulates in several different ways. including fat.

If you get stones, the way you eliminate them is by drinking 2 glasses of cranberry juice at each meal and 1 between meals (more if you can stand it), until the fruit's acidity dissolves the stones. You won't feel them "pass", but they will dissolve and stop hurting in several days, again depending on the individual.

Whatever you do, follow the above solution before you ever go to a doctor who's hot to give you a "surgical solution" when one is not necessary. Good luck!

The reason they are so painful is that they form the same way crystals do, with multiple sharp sides. If you are feeling pain, they are almost always bigger than the passage your urethra provides, therefore, they are scraping the delicate tissue as they attempt to make their escape from the body. I have been told they can be more painful than childbirth, I, thankfully, have not experienced them first hand, but I do know several people who have. I recently ran across this information in the research update section of 'First For Women', a health magazine. While the magazine is aimed at women, kidney stones tend to plague primarily men, so my mother and I quickly passed on the information to my brother who has has terrible trouble with kidney stones, even being hospitalized twice. The recommendation is that you drink 4 ounces of pure lemon juice mixed into 64 ounces of water daily. It prevents and dissolves kidney stones. Lemon boosts production of urinary citrate, a chemical that inhibits stone formation. Try searching 'lemon juice kidney stones' on Yahoo to get info on the web, there are dozens of articles claiming the same thing.

They are painful because the blockede of the renal pyramids and tubules results in stimulating the nerve endings that carry pain sensation. Their prevention is dependent on the type of the stone. But you can generally prevent them by drinking a lot of water.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.

They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!

This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.

It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

Because they are trying to pass through your system. They are usually too big to pass and this causes the pain. A doctor can assess your situation and see if an operation is needed to get rid of them or they will suggest it passes normally with lots of prune juice.
