I wonder at this myself. Maybe they just don't understand the concept

You must have noticed that the spellchecker here is in many cases quite useless.
It corrects obvious spelling mistakes, but can't tell whether e.g."then" or "than" is right, or "there" or "their" is the appropriate word, which gives rise to more misunderstandings and bad impressions than simple typing errors. And if someone really does not know how a certain word is spelled, the choice of similar or same sounding words offered by the spellchecker can be quite confusing and misleading.
Another reason is that sometimes the spellchecker scrambles up or deletes your message, that happened to me twice.

Because the Internet and Mobile Phone generation are lazy, with over developed thumbs for texting - and toughened knuckles for dragging along the ground! It beats me how some of these people actually read - oh hang on .. .most of them probably don't bother with books ;-)

I had a discussion with a friend over this. She's an avid texter and her argument was that language is a means of transferring information, so who cares if the spelling is incorrect as long as the main theme gets across, of which I generally agree. However, at some point , correct spelling and grammar (and mine is by no means perfect) is required as a reference point at least. The lazy writers amongst you rely on the fact that most people can decipher what you're getting at, because somewhere in the dim and distant past most of us went to school to learn to read/write, for a while at least !! Language is dynamic though, forever changing, don't let it change too quickly though.

Ha, just noticed a spelling mistake in my own drivel !!

Because spell checks are limited. They do not pick out inappropriate words and some do not identify grammatical errors. Not everyone has a computer and it is often easier to write long hand in places that are quiet, particularly if you are on holiday or away from home. If we take the trouble to picture words in our minds, checking the spelling yourself becomes easy and it develops the memory and trains the mind to be logical.

I sometimes use spell check & other times dont, here is the reason :

1) I'll use it, if i'm writing to someone whom I need to ensure where I cannot make a negative impression, incorrect spelling does that.

2) I wont use it with friends & family if I'm short of time.

3) I will rarely use it, on programs where its not automatically on or does not exist (ie. Yahoo Answers or Yahoo Mail).

Maybe the same applies to people writing to you.

Most people want to be the first to answer a question, thinking that it will get them chosen as the best answer, so they don't want to waste time with checking the spelling. Pesonally, if an asnwer is full of mispellings, I will not choose it as the best.

Maybe some people actually believe their spelling is OK, or they simply don't care.
Then there are those who are so used to texting on a phone that they have forgotten th importance of correct spelling.
Grammar is another thing greatly neglected on here.

1) People are in too big of a hurry to get the answer down to be certain of their spelling

2) Spell Check doesn't always work, especially for anyone caught up in the than/that problem

I don't know =[ but I suppose they are just too lazy to spell-check writings that are sent over the net.
