It was for the protection of property and wealth, and to insure that the children were the offspring of the man taking care of them. In many societies there were no official marriages if there was nothing to protect. Later on it became a way to protect the women and children during the extended periods of pregnancy and infancy. Love, as such didn't have much place in marriage until recently. Historically speaking that is. I don't remember anything about Eves wedding gown, just a bit about creating a mate, so religion may not have been in it from the bible, though they have jumped in with both feet since then. But marriages have been arranged for a very long time among the upper classes whether you are trading cows for the bride or property along the Thames.
There does seem to be a human desire to form a smaller unit than the tribe or clan, and the when prohibited from marrying they announce their intention to be such a unit, or engage in things like "jumping the broom" or some other local version of what they are doing in the upscale forum. Oddly enough you can still see this in civil marriages and the desire for same-sex marriage. I suppose we aren't over that need, nor have we stopped evolving in our purpose for marriage.

The purpose of marriage in its highest form is for man and woman to join together and become one.

Men have certain characteristics as females do, combining, working together through are thus able to view the world in a 360 degree and grow together.

Additionally, elements of marriage, is possible growth of family (procreation), and sex, religion

Lastly, there is the venue that the purpose of marriage is that God designed marriage and the Bible states this - it appears that many people are anti God or anti religion but that some of these very people are still getting married - these individuals I would state they get married for companionship - stability - family - because that is still a socially accepted practice and they do it because everyone else does

Good question.
For some people there is a religious purpose. For others it is financial. For some it is just romantic.
If I would ever get married, I would only do it because then we would have something to say about each other's lives when we are in the hospital after a heavy accident or something like that. Legal issues.

Marraige is a condition for the creation and pro-creation of the future generation. This was the original concept and belief. Today you are stuck with any thing goes. You can create and pro-create future generation without a MARRAIGE. Is this correct?

to make loney people feel like they really have domething to look forward to. but in reality they don't because in most cases people go into marriage look at it as a way out of real life but that makes their life so much worse.

To be with the one YOU choose to be with for the rest of your life. But when things go wrong choose another person or go through life alone, happy, or sad. There is no right answer, it's all up to our individual preferences.
