The caramels will soften, but they will not melt into a consistency that I think you may be looking for...as cake cools, they will become hard again...You would need to melt some in the microwave, or on top of the stove first....to do this, add a teaspoon of water to about a handful of caramels...stir until melted...prepare cake mix batter, and just after pouring into cake pans, pour caramel mixture over batter while gently "cutting " into batter with a kitchen knife...making sure not to "cut" to the bottom of pan...you are just wanting to swirl the caramel into the batter....this is quite lovely with any chocolate or yellow cake mix.... enjoy!!

Ive tried this and they all and to the bottom, My husband raved about the crispy texture of the burnt caramel. I have never tried it again, so I'm not sure how to actually achieve it successfully.

If you want them well mixed in, melt them seperatley first. Then prepare your cake and place it in the pan swirling them in afterwards...then place in the oven.
(I have a friend that does this with brownie and they are the best thing I've ever had! )

Perhaps but maybe not as well as you would like and it would harden somewhat again . I would suggest you try using the soft liquid carmel used as an ice cream topping . That sounds delicious and would seemingly work much better and mix well with the batter , yummy !
