But then the more you learn about Hawai'i you feel like your invading? I love Hawai'i and I wish I could live there, and I love the rich culture and history of the Hawaiian people. I'm sad for all the island people that whites have literally 'stolen' it with capitalism, and asians made it too expensive for even native Hawaiians to live there. How can I feel at peace with my longing to live in Hawai'i without the shame?

There is a documunted syndrome identified as "Polynesian Paralysis" It is both Biological,Physiological, & psychological. Some people lose the ability to think & act with their best wisdom because they are overwhelmed with the many intoxicating factors of the Islands. Using common sense & just slowing down from your euphoric high & letting the same wisdom you use at home, like asking the locals what the protocols are or simply put "how to act" then following up in that manner is not invading but being respectful. But ignorance is not an excuse, most of the natives are very friendly & helpful, of course just like anywhere in the world you have ur bad apples. Hawaii has the lowest violent crime rate in the country, only the property crimes are high, so don't say I didn't warn you, DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING IN YOUR TRUNK OR BACKSEAT! The car rentals even print stickers & place them in ALL of the rent a cars! As far as the Asains making it too expensive, it's just a handfull of greedy people just like everywhere in the world again. I'm Asain, my ancestors came here in the early 1900's, most of my friends are Asains , None, I repeat NONE of my friends own any homes or condo's over $3-$500.000. And the ones with the 1/2 mil homes will die B4 they pay off their homes. We live here & love life, go fishing, love our kids, turn da dial back a couple of notches, live longer because of less stress & more time w/ family & more time off to exercise & have fun. Money isn't everything. Happiness, family, friends, lifestyle, spirituality, & respect for our land & our people & those who came B4 us so that we can have this & perpetuate this kind of lifestyle long way down into our family trees. There are other places in the world with great theories of life, but Hawaii has proven that ours works & we'll work hard to extend it into etrnity. Mahalo for allowing me to express......Aloha.

The biggest problem is that most of the land is in trusts and when you buy a house or building you don't ow the land and have to lease it from the trust that owns it. Much like building a permanent house in a trailer park on the mainland. There is a very small portion of 'Fee Simple" land that can actually be purchased. You can feel at peace living in Hawaii by embracing the culture and treat people with respect. I have lived off and on in Hawaii for several years and love the Islands and the people. The few people that treat you with contempt are usually not native Hawaiians and are most likely Samoans.

You're obviously aware of the problems in Hawaii and would not contribute to them. I don't see why you should feel guilt about moving there/wanting to move there. You could make the same argument about living w/in the continental United States. This land was stolen and certain people have made it too expensive for these native people to live here as well. You shouldn't feel any shame, you appreciate their culture and want to be part of it. I say move there.

There are still rural areas of Hawaii that carry the old spirit of Aloha. You can still find less expensive areas to live in too especially on the Big Island Hawaii. The weather is perfect year round, the prevailing winds keep pollution from settling in, you can still find unspoiled wilderness throughout the islands. Hawaii is one of the most beautiful spots in the world still.

Because people are so nice to everybody (even though the haoles killed the queen to steal the islands from the people). The food is excellent. And the weather is just so beautiful!!! Besides, there are so many things to do and visit that you cannot even whet your appetite if you stayed there for two years.

Stay away from Honolulu, Maui and Hawaii. There are other islands less westernized.

Try Lanai or Molokai.
