Everybody has a different healing equation. We all heal at different rates and speeds from whatever ailments we get from the common cold to cancer. There are people who smoke for 50 years and never get any related sickness from it.....and then there are non smokers who wind up with lung cancer.

So to answer your question, running will not increase the chances of your lungs returning to optimal capacity. What it will do is increase the chances of you living a happy and healthier life...so keep it up, but don't expect a run a day to make you heal faster. Sorry.

And for the record, your body CHANGES it's makeup through chemical and horomone release every seven years.....it does not regenerate. If it did that we would live forever.

As an ex smoker myself, I have always read that regardless of your activity level, it takes 10 to 15 years for the lung tissue to return to normal.

They won't in fact be very careful as this can actually cause the cancer your trying to avoid. Don't give your lungs need to re-generate too much or the effects will be worse than 500 cigs a day. Cancer is caused by the continual need to re-generate the same bit of tissue, eventually your body tries something else which is cancer cells. So the last thing you want to do is exercise too hard before you have had a chance to re-cuperate.

My doctor told me it would take 5 years for my lungs to return to normal so i dont know where you got 15 years from, would it be any different for someone who runs 20-30 miles a week? dont know, dont think it would make much difference.

Running 20/30 miles a week is not going to repair damage to the lungs.

Once they are damaged it could be never.

Although the body renews itself completely every seven years.

I gave up over twenty years ago and I have been dedicated to sport activity and my lugs are still not right.

Some doctors claim that the effects of smoking are reversible, but in reality, I dont think this is true, the liver is the only organ I know of, which can regenerate itself, not the lungs.

Hiya, doing extra exercise wont help a great deal other than keeping you fit, I was told that it takes 7 years for every year you smoked so it depends on that really.
