Drug dealing and abuse, excluding marijuana, is the worst threat there is. Meth, crack, heroin, they all make abusers crazy for more. This causes familys to break down and leads to robberys, assaults, and murder. Clean up the drugs and the other crimes pretty much go away too.

In my opinion, the top two are economic crimes and sexual crimes against children. This is a very difficult question, because all crime poses danger to the fabric of society, But I choose these two categoies, and really cant say that either is more harmful, because our way of life is built upon economic fair play and a level playing field for success. Anyone who commits an economic crime not only directly harms the victim but also weakens the very fabric upon which modern western civilizaion is based. Sex crimes against children are equally harmful, because such crimes have deep and long lasting adverse affects upon the victim; while the molestor or rapist views the crime as a momentary release of twisted passion, the damage caused can affect the personality, psychological state of mind, and emotional futue of the victim for life. Might even be worse than murder. At least in my opinion.

I'd say domestic abuse/violence/neglect because personalities are shaped by parents NOT society/environment.
* If only, parents were peaceful, fun, anti-war, empathetic, supportive, loving, respectful, uncontrolling but providing well balanced boundaries...the adults, they become, would not be a danger to others.
* If only, parents are kind, wise, offer guidance but allowing personal freedom to create, find out for themselves, explore in safety, and so connected to the child that they could recognise mental disorders and get early treatment and assistance.
* If parents chose not to be parents until they had dealt with their own mental and emotional disorders...and were mature adults themselves.
* Children grow up to be sociopaths, terrorists, pedophiles etc due to bad parenting skills because even if bad things happen to good people...a good parent teaches a child how to cope and react to outside forces in a healing way.
* Parents can jump up and down and say I did my best etc.....but the truth is most parents allow abuse to go on in the house....smacking, yelling, name calling, swearing, being unavailable, lack of boundaries, bullying...and they dont see the damage it does until too late...if indeed they care at all.
The general public is EVERYONE, every single person in the whole world. Terrorism, murder etc, effects one or many or hundreds or millions (for example - WW2 Hitler wouldnt have been a madman if his parents were wonderful). If all children were raised really well, there would be none (or very little) of the above. So....criminal behaviour starts at home and IS the greatest threat to each child ever born....and usually goes hidden, unreported because its too difficult to police.

I would say honestly...Drugs any and all!!
People will steal from, murder or hurt anyone without regard for their next high.
It's brought poverty to good families, destroyed lives that may have otherwise been successful and caused people to do horrible things to innocent people.
That or baby rapers!!! If you ever see me in jail, I will have murder by name because some idiot put their hands on one of babies. However this one may just be the most disgusting of all the crimes out there, not really the greatest threat though.

I think the greatest immediate threat to the general public is running from the cops in a car. There are several TV shows devoted to this problem, and it seems to be getting worse.

Sociopaths are the greatest threat to the public no matter what their crime.
Sociopaths have no remorse or feelings of guilt for what they do or who they injure. So whether they perform a petty theft or a murder they treat it exactly the same

lack of being invovled There has always been criminals, and always will be, but there has been an increase in the lack of the public to do thier responsiblity and get invovled.
In the news this week, people watched someone stab his wife and then stab the baby ( many times) I am sorry I could not stand by and watch someone do this.

I recently was ticketed for having parked with "left wheels to the curb" (that is, parking on wrong side of street). This obviously puts the safety of the entire nation at risk.

If you are talking about what kills more people than anything else every year the answer is going to be speeding. Everything else metioned here I completely agree with but if you want to talk about what kills more Americans every year it is accidents related to their speed.
