Bipolar is a psychiatric illness. It used to be known as manic depression but its not so PC to call it that anymore.
The condition is characterised by periods of depression and periods of elevated mood. Biploar = two poles apart ie. depressed and elevated mood.
When in the depressive state people lose all interest in what they do. They cannot get up, do their job and take care of their families (look after children).
In the elevated mood phase people act uncharacteristically and take part in erratic behaviour and they do not think the consequences through. They can go on spending sprees, embark on pomiscious relationships and generally do things that they would not normally do.
People do not go from feeling depressed to elated overnight. It happens over time.
People with Biploar are treated with lithium and if they take their medication they can manage and cope well in society and be like any other person really.

Bipolar disorder(which is also known as manic depression) is a mental illness involving episodes of serious mania and depression. These can be severe mood swings accompanied by changes in emotions, thoughts, behaviours, physical health and functioning. The mood swings are more extreme and more prolonged than the everyday ups and downs that we all experience. Emotions may vary from from depression and hopelessness through to feeling overly elated('high') or irritable. People usually go through periods of normal mood in between these times.

Bipolar disorder (also called manic-depressive disorder) is an illness that causes extreme mood changes that alternate between manic episodes of abnormally high energy and the extreme lows of depression.
Bipolar disorder may cause behavior so severe that you may not be able to function at work, in family or social situations, or in relationships with others. Some people with bipolar disorder become suicidal.
What causes bipolar disorder?
The cause of bipolar disorder is not completely understood, but the disorder runs in families and may also be affected by your living environment or family situation. An imbalance of chemicals in the brain is another possible cause.
