Can you say "Normal"? I've never met a normal 2 year old who would sit still! When he's 5, you can enjoy the quiet! For now, let him enjoy his play.

A good thing to do however, is to get a few books that are aimed at his age level and read to him. These are usually just pictures with words, or Dr. Seuss type books with silly rhymes. Pick the book up invite him to hear a story. Let him climb into your lap and get comfy. Then read the book with him. Try to keep your voice happy, like the cartoons sound. But if he looses interest and wants down, let him go. This stage is all about his Independence! It's best to try books when he's getting sleepy. Otherwise accept the place he's in and never force anything...until he's 13, that is.

Tell us a bit more about why this concerns you. Is it that your child doesn't seem to enjoy sit-down or desk work and prefers more active activities? Has he or she actually begun to show an interest in printing and colouring and perhaps "lost" interest? Two and a half years of age is still quite young and it may not be reasonable to expect lots of purposeful printing and drawing at this stage. Your child is still developing, exploring and learning to create. Following you child's lead seems best. Encourage his or her emerging talents: an appreciation of music and interest in play (especially cooperative play with other children) can indiciate that strong social skills are emerging. Try not to force matters, which could lead to total avoidance of the activities you'd like your child to do more often. Certainly do the activities your child enjoys (music and play are so stimulating!) and make drawing and writing tools available with other play materials. Try to incorporate pencil and paper activities into music and play games. Make time every day to do some guided printing (e.g., hand over your child's hand) and colouring together - the one-on-one company and opportunity to make something with you could really capture his or her interest. Post the artwork and writing attempts (scribbles) around the house - your pride and enthusiasm for whatever your child produces will encourage him or her to do more of the same.

Consult the PBS telelvision link below (and others) to learn more about writing development in children. It will help to shed light on how (and when!) skills in this area develop and how to support printing during the early years.

Quiet play is not a hallmark of 2-3 year old children. Some children enjoy scribbling with crayons, some prefer to eat them, and some would rather leave them alone all together. A healthy active toddler usually prefers to be up moving, getting into things, and mastering the world around them. Music and play are the work of the toddler. They have extremely short attention spans, and will seldom do any activity for more than a few minutes time. You may have better luck as your toddler gets older, expecially if you sit down with the crayons and paper along with him/her and encourage drawing for pleasure. If you work it right, you can work and play right along with them, and they will gladly join in the work with you. Turn up the music while you vaccum, dust and pick up- do a bit of dance and invite your toddler to join in. You both have tons of fun, the toddler thinks it's play, and you just made your housework a little easier. Sounds like you have a happy, healthy child to me. So relax and enjoy, and don't stress over the crayons and quiet play just yet.

Your child is normal! Most 2 and a half year olds don't have the attention span to sit and color or write. Music and play is a great way for your child to learn about the world! You'll get a lot of writing and coloring when he/she starts school and has homework.

I found a good answer when I went to "children's attention span" and searched the web. I found a Yahoo Resolved Answer. I wish I knew enough about how to work the computer to give you the exact information. If you can find it, I think you would be well informed.
Sorry

Sounds like your child is more interested in interactive activities This is fine. I know I'd rather play music and run around than sit on my butt!
People are all different. Surely you don't want your kiddo to be just like everyone else! Don't worry, your child is fine and unique!

At that age they just are not interested in sitting for any period of time. Coloring will come later.

That is wonderful that at such a young age your child seems to know what he likes - he's two don't think if he wants to write or color that it is all that important

Shart before you do your yoga and also you've gotten no shart left. Shart - a small, unintentional defecation that takes position at the same time as one relaxes the anal sphincter to fart (mixture of "sh*t" and "fart")
