The two main criteria to decide what to buy are --
i) Your interest in photography. Your interest will make you spend that extra bucks.
ii) Your budget.
As you have a good budget, go for Canon Powershot S3IS with 1GB card. You will get that in India in grey market within that amount. This is a semi professional camera and is the best in this category. However, if you do not want to go for such high end model, then best bet is Canon Powershot A620. This is one of the best camera in the market. If you search in the net, it will be confirmed. This will cost less than 20K in grey. Howeevr if you do not want to go for grey, then you wil have the option of S31S to be excluded.

Start with the budget. This may seem backwards, but it's not. You can find a decent camera to match any amount of money you want to spend.
Next, find a friend who will help you learn how to use the camera. This "friend" could even be the clerk in your local photo shop. Buy the camera that your friend recommends so that they will be able to teach you how to use it.
After you know what you are doing and are ready for your next camera - and this will come sooner than you think - you will be in a position to make your own choice.
If you have some vague ideas about price and ddesired features, go to http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare.asp and see what they select for you.

Been photographing around for last 14 years my first digi cam was power shot A70 second 20D with with L lenses. For family photos or when I don't want to carry the weight of 20D+lenses I use A70 Its good but can't compete with pro cams, Its all up to you weather u want to buy big heavy and hardly take it out or buy light weight and carry it around. Now for pro touch, as some one earlier mentioned s3IS will be best buy, and you will need years before you need a better cam.

I used this site to help pick my first and still my only digital camera, four years ago. I got a canon powershot s30. of course it is outdated now, but it still suits my needs and takes such great pics that I can not justify replacing it. I am waiting for it to break and it will not. lol
Hope this helps you.

frm your question it seems you are just likely want to learn the basic.....then for next few months why waste your money on a expensive stuff....for a thousand rupees you would get a look & shoot camera....use that for a while....learn the basics....then go for a good one.....like SONY....they are good....will suit your requirements in future....as of now....
