I don't know what Bellamy's opinion is now, but he didn't seem to think that the melting of the ice was a serious issue a while ago. He seemed to suggest that there wasn't a CO2 problem. This was on Newsnight a while back.
The write up on him on this Yahoo website seems to suggest otherwise.
What does he now think about the melting of the ice & the polar bear problem. Does he think it is a problem or just an intermittent and isolated one?

Firstly I have to say that there is a great deal of experimental evidence to show that increased co2 levels are a result of increased temperatures rather than the cause.
Secondly the planet is not in any danger, it has been through many much more violent environmental changes than even the most pessimistic doom warriors predict and still survives and prospers.
Human society as we know it and the crazy overpopulation of our species may very well be in danger. The possible coming environmental chaos may well be just the Earth's way of bringing the human population back into balance with its environment. If we don't learn to control our own population by social/political means then nature will do it for us, and that will be very unpleasant indeed.

I can't answer your initial question, but I've got a comment about this:

"What does he now think about the melting of the ice & the polar bear problem. Does he think it is a problem or just an intermittent and isolated one?"

The polar bear problem I'm assuming is in reference to polar bears drowning in the ocean since ice floes are becoming few and far between. Here's my question to you. Before humans, some species became more prevelant, others became extinct. Some had to adapt to changing conditions (reptiles in the desert, plants that feed off of volcanic gases at the bottom of the ocean where there is no CO2 or oxygen, etc.) Who's to say that this is simply nature's way of killing off the polar bears or forcing them to adapt? Maybe polar bears need to dwindle in numbers so that the animals they eat can have a breif surge in population again? Maybe the polar bears will come out of this with smaller bodies and limbs more fit for swimming long distances? Maybe they will start looking for food further south and find a new niche in ecosystems Canada or Russia?

My point is, humans have this strange need to try and keep everything the same. Tack on the fact that polar bears are cute (although how this happened I don't know, people are terrified of all other kinds of bears) and suddenly there is a "polar bear problem". Humans have no idea what is best for the planet, and we think that we do. Just like we messed with the wolf population in Yellowstone National Park, trying to do something to save the polar bears could cause a million unintended consequences.

Nature plows forward without regard to human feelings and emotions. It would be prudent to not interfere with this process. Which brings up the point that the measures all the environmentalists want us to take to "stop global warming" has been shown to reduce warming in the next one hundred years by only 0.04 degrees C. Add in uncertainty and that is basically no effect. We can't stop nature, don't use the cute polar bears to further your agenda.

NOAA has been Busted!!
Taking global ocean temperatures over subduction zones with increased volcanic activity and calling it facts to back up out of control global warming.

Fact is America and other parts of the world have taken great steps to clean up the pollution devices we use in our everyday lives.

Since your global warming fear scheme to invent new taxes on the hard working people of this country just got busted for using false and misleading data that was used to support the global warming issue.

This should be bigger News them has been reported, but the truth is leaking out little at a time and NOAA is trying to explain their false Global Warming Data. They are so Busted thanks to the Japan research team that busted them!!!!

I so hate being lied to, So MOVE ON. orgy Mister Al Gore so many new taxes for you to invent.... so little time.

Now it's time for WE THE PEOPLE to wake up and quit supporting those that have been lying to us!

The CO2 problem can be solved with good urban and city planning (for instance by keeping the city plain open) and planting enough trees.

There is no CO2 problem.
Now that the Cold War has ended, it is the governments way of keeping us in a state of angst.
