I have two shepherds, male and female, my female is very alert and barks at any unusual sounds she hears. My male german shepherd does not bark as much, he is more of a silent guard. I had both of them outside the other night and I was cleaning out the lawn equipment shed and a stranger walked up. I didn't hear him because I was making noise in the shed, but he reached out and put his hand on my arm, and I screamed. The female shepherd started barking immediately and came running (we live on several acres and they were playing), the male came silently but when I saw him his hair was standing up and he was drooling and growling. I think the man might have been homeless and probably only wanted food (we find traces of camps in the woods by us), but he didn't stick around long enough for me to explain the dogs wouldn't bite.

The akc rates german shephards & golden retrievers as 2 of the top protective breeds, because of their loyalty & intelligence. A big surprise is that the standard poodle also gets high marks in these catagories. There are many other good watchdogs, but many are too fierce and agressive for house dogs. Of course, if one of these big suckers bites a burglar, you can be sued, so you might want to consider one of the smaller breeds. The smaller dog is just as alert and intelligent, it just won't do as much damage to an intruder. Border collies are very protective, & very loyal. Pomeranians look too small to do much, but they don't know how small they are, and they've got a big heart. Jack Russel terriers are fearless, but they can be overwhelming. They have only one speed, & that's all out! They don't tend to be very obedient, either. Well, I've given you a lot of breeds to consider, but perhaps the most underrated watchdog you should consider, is the all-american dog from your local shelter. That dog will be loving, grateful, and protective to the person who rescues him or her, for the rest of their lives. Good hunting!

No, a bull mastiff isnt a killer. They just knock people down. i'd have to say a boxer is watchful during the night. They are the most protective dog ever, and great with children and a lot of fun. They will NEVER let anything happen to there owner

There are different types of dogs that are good I know of a few breeds from what my friends have. German shepheards are only good if they are trained right, otherwise useless a friend of mine recently had his car stollen and the car didnt even bark! American Rednose Pitbulls are good, American Staffordshire Terriers are good, some labs. Now if your needing something to be up for just nights maybe you should get a monitor and camera to put in the outside

All breeds loose their hearing abilities as the get old so It has to be a young dog. Assuming you don't want it to eat people, then a small dog (Jack Russel) costs less to feed and requires less clearing up.
