Mkae it a point to only naswer when you feel yuo have somethign to contribute. Try to phrase your answer in a way that does not alienate the asker, unless it really is your intent to call someone down for something you feel is inappropriate. Support your answer, but allow the asker to do some research of his/her own rather than tryign to be the "guru" who has THE ANSWER. If you disagree with the asker's statement, try to do so respectfully. If you agree, say so in your answer. It really comes down to 3 things: intent (of your answer), content (is it worth reading but not overwheming), and courtesy.

I think it depends on the type of answer. There are two basic types, fact-based and opinion-based.
For fact-based answers, I'd say answer when you know what you're talking about. Go to the point (you can always expand later, but first provide a straight and short sentence with the main points), and make sure to deliver the information at a level that seems appropriate according to the way the question was phrased (i.e. some Qs use specialized language, while in others it is clear that the asker does not know much about the subject and might require simpler vocabulary).
Cite your sources, and offer additional information if it's appropriate.
Also, if you specialize in a field or a few fields that you know about, some frequent users will start to recognize you and they'll know that you're a sort of "expert" in the matter.
For opinion-based questions: of course in this case, the choice of the Asker may go to an answer that supports his/her view, so there's a factor you can't control. But anyway, you can be respectful and courteous, honest and to the point. At least the others who read the Q and its answers will respect that.
Another important thing is to remember to keep an eye on your answers in case they go to voting. If you honestly feel that your answer is the best one, then vote for yourself.

That is a good question..
People always tend to like to choose an answer that they agree with the most for the best answer...

Tell the people what they want to hear.
Don't be bothered if your best effort to answer is not recognized. We, readers, know what is the best anyway. We appreciate relevant answers to add to our knowledge. It is continuing education and communication that matter.

Sometimes I give them the best answer I can think of and other times I give them flip answers. It depends on how the question is asked. It also depends on what kind of mood I'm at the time.

Give best answer to get best answer points. If you want to simply answer then speak your mind, but if you are looking for best answer point then you should answer in a way the asker will like.

If you don't do this already then you could go back and look at all of your answers that are in voting and vote for your answer wether it is the best one or not.
