This is what I did to learn a language... First be open to new ideas, grammer, pronouceation, etc. other wise you won't get anywhere. You have to have also the time and motivation. Look for a helpful website, I use word2word.com they are really helpful! (Google the language that you want to learn and there should be something there) Also what I did is I got a dictionary, a pharse book, a grammer book, and some self-teaching books that were very easy to understand and learn from. Then I made a chart of when and what I would learn, say I was learning greetings, for a week that's all I would learn/study, also the grammer behind them. Then quiz myself at the end.

At least, you're not new to this language since your family speaks it, that you keep on hearing how the word is being pronounced and its accent ( Filipino has got a neutral accent, not harsh nor soft ).

For the meantime, you can use www.tagalog-dictionary.com for some words that might be useful to you. And I dont suggest any online translation coz mostly are grammatically incorrect. It would be better if someone really teaches you.

I can teach you...email me.

Get a friend to teach you....they'll be more patient than a teacher and you won't be as annoyed when they correct your pronunciation.

learn the following questions:
Ano tawag dito? (what is this called?) ---This will build up your vocabulary

Paano sabihin "(insert english phrase)"? (How do you say....?) ---This will break things down for you to make it easier to learn common phrases.

Edit: didnt read about you not having any Pinoy friends. Guess you're stuck learning from family then...Hey, ask them if you can visit the Philippines for at least 6 months, that's enough time to get a crash course on Filipino. :)

There are some Filipino language tapes/CD available. Get an English-Tagalog dictionary (this is the dialect you want to learn right?). Listen to everybody. Practice talking to your family. Hopefully they will help you with the proper pronunciation.

I'm an American, Born from American parents, Long nose, tall, white and not to good with learning other language I became fluent in Tagalog.... how?.... I spent 2 years in the Philippines on a Mission... We went door to door speaking nothing but Tagalog... so the key is to use it all the time. Don't know a single word? I started out with audio cassettes and memorization, but what really works is to get a dictionary and translate a Tagalog song a day. Look up Tagalog lyrics on-line and see if you can translate a song a day with a dictionary... pretty soon you won't need a dictionary.......... also seek what you know to your family and ask them to only speak Tagalog to to so you can here the Pronunciation. here are some good starter tips.

the philippino "a" is like the "a" in "ball"
"e" is like the "e" in "leg"
"i" is like the "e" in "eat"
"o" is like the "o" in "low"
"u" is like the "u" in "blue"

Vouls next to each other (ex. doon= over there) are pronunced sepratly.some examples: doon(over there)= do'on NOT dune; maliit(small)= Mali'it; Saan(where)= Sa'an; taon(year)=ta'on.

Commenly used phrases
English..... Tagalog
Where are you going?......... Saan ka pupunta?
What is your name?.............Ano ba ang pangalan mo?
how old are you?............ilan taon ka na? or ano ang idad mo?
how do you say_ _in Tagalog.......ano (ba) ang Tagalog ng _ _?
I'm ready...... handa na ako.
I love you....... Mahal kita(I do)
