Buying a Buddha statue for yourself will not bring bad luck. Think about what you have already learned in your studies of Buddhism - does this kind of superstition fit in?
Oh, wait, there is one instance of this "bad luck." If you are a tourist in Thailand and you buy a Buddha from any one of the thousands of Buddha sellers there, your Buddha will be taken away from you by Customs when you try to exit the country.
They have a law against any Buddha being taken out. They say it is out of respect for Buddha. But it's actually an economic issue - they simply "recycle" the Buddhas and sell the same ones over and over. ;-)

I have read a lot about Buddhism and I don't recall any teachings about statues bringing luck but rather you create your own karma and life is difficult anyways. You can lessen your suffering by following the Tao ( the Way)j Awareness, Desiring less, Compassion, Right Speech, Right Mind and so on. I find it all very rational and not about luck at all. T here are some people who believe the Buddha statue brings you luck. The fat gold one is usually depicts this. There are many types of Buddha statues in different poses that have different meanings.

I've heard the same thing. A friend of mine gave me a little fat Buddah and told me that it must be given to you or it will bring bad luck. I'm not really superstitious though.

Well I guess if you're buying it for decoration or something, it doesn't really matter that much.
I think the 'bad luck'(which I don't actually believe in) has more to do with buying one for yourself to make it bring luck to you...

See that you buy a correct statue. Thai and Sri Lankan temples have some of them for sale.
Keep it in a high place like on a cupboard or a high stool. Always respect it. It will bring luck.

Meditation yoga and tantra are the concepts of self control self healing which have its roots from hinduism and bhuddist monks have carried it as they had to face challenges when crossing himalayas ,which today have spread across the globe becoz of its merits n supriority .when doing meditation you can keep buddha or symbol om ( with the om recording the pronouncing this itself has scientific reasons when meditating ) or a shiva linga or nataraja or a oval shaped light or bulb to concentrate .
keeping buddha doesn't get you any bad luck ,its your goodluck but if you still have some doubts ,go with OM it doesn't bring any bad luck OM means welcome to the god ,who is allpowerful.( OM has over 100 meanings)

Who the *F*U*C*K* told you that?!
If you don't buy, can you make one yourself? or steal one from any temples? use common sense!
However, if the statue is for praying, is best that you purify the statue and perform the "open-light" ritual before use, you can get a good monk to do it and do consider the feng-shui about how to put on a praying table. (You may consult monks of True-Buddha School, that I recommend)
Don't treat it with a dark heart, otherwise you will attract demons.

I have been told the same, however, I don't think it does. I have like 50 buddhas, and I'm still lucky.... I think :S
