It is a personal choice.
For Martini's, once you shake the Gin with Ice, and Vermouth, then add an Olive, "most" folks cannot make a distinction as to what brand of Gin that was used.
However, If you were having Gin on the rocks, then there would be a huge difference in taste, and a Connoisseur of Fine Gin would know the difference.

I'm not much of a gin drinker, but once in a while I'll enjoy some. So I'm picky. The best gin I've ever tasted is pretty hard to find, but if you can, buy it! It's by Anchor Steam brewing company. They call it "Old Potrero". Don't let the name decive you though, it hasn't been around that long. So for a non-gin drinker like myself, I love it and I have to reccomend it!

Bombay Saphire.(sic) I've started drinking Martinis again- and have been testing the various Gins. This one is the best that I've used. The reason- as told to me by my experienced bartender is as follows. The Saphire is made with a different kind of Juniper berries- and there are more of them. Also the alcohol content is higher than in the other- for instance Bombay Gins- and I guess other gins- So, if you like the taste of Gin- Juniper berries- and a more potent kick then you're going to like BS a great deal. I'd me interested in other people's opinion

I have never used gin for a martini. I get a lil dry vermouth and swirl it around, dump. Then add some nice Grey Goose, freezing cold and viola!

Well usually the most expensive one is, but there are several moderately priced Gins that are good. In the long run it really does not matter, if the companies want to make money they will make sure that the Gin is to your taste.
