I think cats are, dogs are dumb. But dogs are better because they're so dopey and obeying. Whereas cats are like rebelious children.

Cats are independant and aloof when they choose to be, but does that make them cleverer, I doubt it. I think dogs are far superior in the brain department. Dogs are doing things all day long which if done in the wild would be essential to the survival of the pack (or your family). I don't see a cat ever chasing away anyone or anything which might endanger the family, and dogs communicate with each other using eye movements which most people wouldnt even notice, this helps them communicate to each other when bringing down large prey. Cats are only on this planet through luck, whereas dogs are here through communication, drive, willingness, wits and brains, plus a dog could eat a cat for breakfast!

A perennial question to which you will no doubt get dozens of answers.. .so here's mine!

I have a large 'Maine Coon' type cat and my neighbour has a large Scottie dog. When the Scottie sees my cat sunning herself on my front garden he often runs at her. She looks up, metaphorically yawns, then runs in a wide arc towards my driveway gates (which are always closed.

She knows exactly where the dog is with respect to her position and seems to make sure he is close enough to be going at a reasonable speed, but not close enough to catch her. She then neatly leaps through the narrow vertical rails of the gates and the Scottie, still going at a fair old speed, collides with the gate and reels away with an air of 'Why did I fall for that old trick again?'

Meanwhile, my cat is sitting on the far side of the gates, cleaning her face. I swear she smiles!

Anyway, I think that's a good example of a cat being cleverer than a dog.

Two different species - two different intellects. Their relationship with Man is different and a straight across comparison won't work.
The dog is more dependent on people and wouldn't fare so well as a cat if turned out to fend for itself. The cat is far more resourceful.
On the other hand, how many guide cats for the blind have you seen - or hearing cats for the deaf - or search and rescue cats - or sniffer cats - or champion obedience cats. Leave all this to the dogs, they'll win every time.
Value a dog or a cat for the love and companionship it can bring you - and be prepared to marvel at the smart things both species do in their own way.

Without a doubt Cats are smarter than Dogs.

Sure, dogs can be trained to do things but they are on the whole dependent on their owners and can remain loyal even in situation to their own detriment.
Cats on the other hand can not really be 'trained' against their whim or without the aid of severe bribery and can evaluate situations and decide whether they are advantageous or not. If cats don't like you or the way they're being treated then if they can they'll leave.

You know what they, Dogs have owners, Cats have staff.

I believe cats! I use to think cats where stupid in comparison with dogs but since I received a cat, 4 years ago, I tend to think they are allot smarter than dogs. Dogs follow an ancestry line way back to wolfs, which hunt in packs, cats most of the time have to outsmart its prey alone. But it doesn’t say anything; it’s a smart thing to hunt in packs but also to hunt alone… Technically I don’t think it is possible to tell, which is the more intelligent one, its like saying extroverts are smarter than introverts, does not make sense, all mammals are different. I know the enchant Egyptians had great respect for cats!

It's a good question...I was an animal behaviour trainer for a couple of years, but everybody has their own opinion.

From the evolution point of view they have both changed their appearance to appear cute and learnt to play on human's natural tendency to nurture. Let's face it kittens and puppies are irresistible and I defy anyone not to go Ahhhhh when they see either.

Both can be trained to do tricks, despite popular opinion that cats will refuse to do something if they don't want to. It's simply a matter of technique. Both respong to an action/reward principle but cats have the ability to assess a situation and respond accordingly. My kittens are only 21 weeks old but they already know how to sit, jump, come when I call their names and even give me a high 5! But on the other hand my Dad has a guide dog and when told to "take me to the pub" it knows exactly what is expected of him, even to the point of sitting at an empty table...more importantly he also understands "take me home".

Dogs are traditionally more affectionate, but this is just because they are exitable. Cats on the other hand show genuine affection and can purr (let's face it, it's less annoying than constant barking and whining) although all they may want is some food. This displays true intelligence and cunning, along with an ability to actually communicate.

Cats will go to the toilet in a litter tray, dogs just don't bury their own crap, leaving you to pick it up...invariably chosing to take a huge dump just as a group of nice looking girls are walking past. To a dog you are their ***** in this instance, but don't believe they are doing it by coincidence...they know...still it's funny when it is someone else so they get a point for humour.

When thrown out of a window...(I do not condone this behaviour in any way at all, but hypothetical situation)Cats always land on their feet. Nuff said there.

A dog will run after a stick and bring it back, but they will also run after it if you pretend to throw it. A cat can be taught how to fetch too but if you don't throw something they won't run around looking for it. Thay will just look at you as if you are stupid. I like that in a pet.

On the suvival stakes, a cat can be completelt self sufficient and still retains it's ability to hunt to survive. On the other hand dogs have been cross-bred by humans and lost that ability, I can hardly see Fluffy the old lady next door's poodle suviving without being hand fed roasted chicken and carried around in a burburry dog carrier.

Dogs make good guards and make you look "hard". A staffie with a studded leather collar give you more street cred than walking through your 'hood with a persian on a lead.

Finally, I have never heard of a dog travelling hundreds of miles to be reunited with their owners several weeks after they moved house. The internet is full of such stories about cats, they have a supernatural homing ability.

Quite simple really, A dog may appear to be more itelligent due to the fact that it learns tricks and plays fetch ECT. But a cat can remember exactly where it lives, doesn't need a lead, responds to care and affection, not a whistle and has a sense of smell and hearing equal to dog. Therefore, I must say cats.

I have four cats, and have had dogs in the past, and I believe as far as being clever goes...cats...my cats play fetch, they are entertaining to the fullest! I have one baby that will run and open a door that is shut..it's hilarious to watch, I also have a touch lamp that they love to jump on the dresser and wake me up in the wee hours of the morning.
They are particular, and sense people more, I believe, one of my cats if he likes you, he will play in your hair, if he doesn't, he stays away, and the others follow.
I just adore my kids!

Dogs are more obedient & easier to train but this doesn't necessarily mean that they're more intelligent. Cats can't be told what to do. They're very independent. They don't need you the way dogs do so they're more difficult to manipulate. I love cats! So beautiful, graceful, always land on their feet....they just seem superior to dogs! If cleanliness is next to godliness, cats win out because dogs are filthy, smelly & disgusting! Cats don't even need training to be housebroken. They know to go in a litter box & bury their mess right away.
