Very good question! In popmusic there are no rules for how you should write your own melody. In classical music you can find a lot of rules depending on which style you are writing in.

Here are some tips for you:
1. what is the mood of the text? Is it happy/angry/ romantic ...?
Is it slow or fast.
2. Should it be a tune in major or minor?
3. Don't be afraid to repeat yourself.
4. where is the text most important? What should that sound like?
Pick out a small fragment of the text, say it loud/soft repetedly and start to listen for rythm or melody that could suit it.
5. MOST TRICKY....the harmonies... Yet again there are thousands of books about this subject. There are no right or wrong here, you rule! But a good piece of advice would perhaps be- not to wander too far from the original start key and to get back to it.
You can also do it the "easy" way. Find a song that you think sounds like the one you want to write, borrow some of the harmonies BUT put your own melody on top of it. And even better, change the speed the chord changes, change the instruments that play and perhaps change some of the chords too and voilà! your own song!
I know it sounds close to stealing, but actually most of the music in pop/rock/folksongs are written using related harmonies. I can get more technical in this subject but I doubt it would help you any more!
So good luck with your song! And remember, the most important thing is WHAT you want to express. You need to fully convince yourself that you really mean what you sing!

try to make up your own. Sing the words making up your own, then try something else til you find something you like, then record and either write music to paper or find someone say that can do it for you.
