The most efficient force has to be the Navy. The Navy can do the jobs of the others - fly planes and helicopters from ships/carriers, ground assault (marines are part of RN) - but they cant sail or engage the enemy in a tactical naval battle. The RN is the senior service in the UK and outranks the other services. Having been a Naval Officer myself and so having first hand experience of working with other Navies - the RN rocks, the US Navy is the most imcompetant and unprofessional Navy I have ever worked with and never won war games against the Royal Navy in any tactical engagement during my years of service. Although to be fair they had the disadvantage of having to use the same number of warships as us!!!!

It's like asking what's the best haircolor.
The US Marine Corps has a reputation for being 'the best'. It also has a reputation for being the dumbest. [Maybe being the dumbest is the best.]
I always considered the US Air Force to be the 'best' due to the fact that it achieves & embraces 'air superiority' & hence seems to qualifiy as the best and definitely the most 'modern'.
The US Navy could be percieved as the best service for world travel & seamanship, diversity of jobs to include Naval Aviation & tradition of heritage. The US Navy is a far cry from the Royal Navy but the ancient history & expansive realm of seafarring makes it a strong contender, if not the 'best'.
But for me, the US Army was the best. 12 years of being a professional soldier provided enough discipline & training to realize a splendid quality of lifes opportunities & education without overwhelmingly errasing certain civil liberties.
The US Coast Guard shouldn't be overlooked in their rescue capacities as well as policing actions. But I'm justa landlubber!

Which ever one you want to be in. All of them have great opportunities. Decide on your interests and then go to a recruiter. If you want to do the Marines, Navy, or Coast Guard you can check them out all at the same place. Personally I'd go Marines or Navy but I've already had some experience and know I love it. Hope you find the right branch and that it fits you.

my husband was navy, twice - once on the kittyhawk flightdeck and once as a seabee. he is now army. his uncle is airforce. so from that i would still go with navy. the army (at least where we are) is disorganized at best. the airforce gives little room for advancement - someone has to retire or die for you to advance. the navy is not perfect either, but my husband was much happier as a seabee. also - ask a marine, they hate squids, but seabees are great! go figure - they're all navy, but i guess a little rivalry is good.
besides, what's better - Hooah!, Oorah!, or Can do! are we gorillas or people?
