I don't understand it. Looks like that would only anger any ex-boyfriends she had and provoke them to show up at the wedding with a semi-automatic assault rifle.

Actually, it's a tradition that came from the British law that all engagements needed to be posted in the newspapers, in order to notify the public, and anyone who might have legal claims against the bride and/or groom.

It has nothing to do with "catching" someone...Nor is it something that women, in particular, do (most of the time, you'll see the photo of a man and a woman together!).

It is also something that not everyone does (I believe it is much more popular on the East Coast than it is on the West Coast). My guess is that the type of people who have ex-boyfriends who own semi-automatic rifles are not the type who would post these.

It's to let the world know about this happy time!

It's not about ticking off exboyfriends or exgirlfriends or making ANYONE mad. Most of the brides I know have SO much on their mind that "getting back" at anyone isn't really a high priority.

When you just get engaged, you are on cloud 9! Why WOULDN'T you want to tell the world, starting with your home town?

I know when I posted mine it was to show my loser of an ex that I was better without him.
Mostly, we do it so that we can show other women that our man is taken, and to announce it to the community. Its a very exciting time in a girls life when we get engaged.

Okay call me petty, but nothing was better than getting the call from my psycho ex boyfriend the day after my announcement hit the paper. He pretended to not know I was engaged. It made me appreciate my man all that much more!!

That's why you don't mention the date, location and time of the wedding.

Families actualy are the ones who usually run those announcements. It's a wanna-be "high society" sort of thing. People think they're big news.

They just want to show off and tell relatives they don't talk to on a regular basis. My sister sent an announcement to each city with relatives of ours so they could know without her calling everyone. We have a HUGE family and that would be one big phone bill.

It is to let old classmates and friends know that you are getting married. It is notifying the town that you will be getting married soon. It shouldnt anger ex-boyfriends unless they are still holding on and are that mad. Its also a way for parents to let people they know also that their children are getting married.

They want to proclaim their love to the world. Also, it's a great way to brag about your accomplishments and family connections. Never mind me, I'm just bitter because I couldn't post mine because my guy was being stalked by an ex-girlfriend and we didn't want her to know anything about me or at least not make it easy for her.
