we,ve had the dog one week. He,s from a family who didnt have time for him and hardly ever let him out ( I,m begining to realise why. ) Hes not aggresive in fact hes passive to the point of wimpiness, hes so happy to make acquaintance with other dogs, but obviously goes about it in the wrong way as they all bite him. He also doesn,t bark, is that normal? Even the nicest natured dogs go for him - help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what can I do to.prevent this?????????????.................................

the answer is simple: hes not a dominant dog, hes passive as you said. not alpha dog. this is actually very common for border collies! it is the nature of their breed to be shy and timid. your dog is doing what his breed does. the other dogs sense that he isnt alpha and they let him know it. thats how dogs work. try having him meet another border collie and see what happens. most likely they will be "friends". and good for you for getting him out of the situation he was in before! border collies are great pets, and they need lots of attention and room to RUN! unfortunately, there isnt much you can do to prevent the other dog from attacking. but if youre, say, walking through a park and you see another dog approaching, stop your dog, keep him on the opposite side of the other dog (ie, if the other dog is on your left side, keep your dog on your right side). keep enough distance between the two dogs that the other cant attack. and if you feel it necessary, let the other owner know before they actually get to you that you would appreciate it if they could just keep control of their dog so that their dog cant get to yours. or you could suggest to them (if you want the dogs to meet) that you take it slow with the meeting (and keep the dogs opposite of each other!). if any aggression is shown, make sure your dog wont get bit. the other dog is simple establishing dominance, its natural.
i hope all that was semi-understanable! good luck! and try to have your dog meet other border collies.

I would take him to see your his vet just to check him over. Chances are if he cowards down around other dogs and even kinda cowards towards you petting him he was abused. You say he doesn't bark at all.Let the vet check his throat to make sure the people that had him before you didnt abuse him. When a dog has been abused it takes a while for the dog to trust anyone. Dog training classes would help also.It could teach your dog how to greet other dogs .Your dog might have low self esteem from the abuse of the other dogs etc.Dogs have a sense and they can sense when another dog is picked on and some dogs automatically just go to picken kinda like the school bully.

Can you take him to obedience class, where he is in a controlled setting and you can monitor his reaction to other dogs? I have Border Collies, they are the BEST dogs in the history of dogs, I will only ever for the rest of my life have either a Border Collie or a Springer Spaniel - they're very similar in that they're way smart but I know what you're seeing here, it's almost like the mini-Einstein in school...They get picked on, because they're too good. You need to treat him like the fabulous creature he is. It sounds stupid, but build up the confidence, take him to training, let him know your expectations, this breed is built to make you happy.

What everyone else said so far. Also, remember that you are supposed to be protecting your dog from attacks. Other dogs must not be allowed to bite him, or even approach him. He doesn't need friends - he needs a master he can trust.

Since you just got him, he's the new kid on the block as far as the other dogs are concerned. He will have to remain on a leash until the rest of the dogs in your area are used to him.

It's normal...He smells like the new boy on the block .....He's a bit of a wimp and that doesn't help things..Take him to some training session so he can start mixing with other dogs and gain a bit of self confidence.
