This has been a mystery to me for a long time. Swear words don't offend me. Why do they get bleeped on TV... who cares if little kids know them - I knew them when i was 3 (from older siblings) - they're just WORDS!! They're not meant to be used in certain situations for politeness, but otherwise - who cares?

How about this question - do you find it annoying when they bleep words on TV that are totally harmless? On "The View" they bleeped McGreevy saying how he wouldn't come out as gay because people would call him "fa*" and "ho**" - well, if u bleep it, how r u supposed to understand what he went through??

Wow you guys make a lot of assumptions about people who swear. I went to a top 10 school for undergrad, and for grad school I am going to another top 10 ivy league school...everyone around here, including tenured professors, swears. I'm not making it up. So a dozen publications in Nature, Science, and major scientific journals invalidates someone's intelligence because they say f* and s* - wow... talk about ignornant!

Swear words are offensive, and really rather pointless on top of it. If you want to sit around and swear in your own home, there's not a lot anyone can do about it. But I find it offensive when people do it loudly in public where other people can hear - especially children. It's very inappropriate. Just because YOU grew up in a home where profanity was used doesn't mean everyone is/did.

In addition, it makes you sound moronic. I always wonder how people got through all the mandatory schooling and still have a vocabulary of nothing but four-letter words. Profanity, to me, is an indication of extremely low intelligence. I always feel tempted to give those types of people a thesaurus, to help them expand their extremely limited vocabulary.

Lastly, what is the point? Swearing is (supposedly) to shock people - if it's every other word out of your mouth, it's not shocking, it's not rebellious, it's just you being your inarticulate, unintelligent, probably somewhat illiterate self. That's not impressive, that's sad.

How old are you? this is because it is disrespectful to the viewers. Just because they don't offend you doesn't mean they don't offend others. Were are the persons manners using this language? It also gives the U.S. a more unwanted reputation, more than it has now (no offense meant in last sentence). I am for one that likes good grammar and do not want my children to hear/see these things, even though I know it will be said on a bus or in school.

Because swear words are euphemism for God.
(You asked, I'm telling you!)

euphemism: A word or phrase that is used to replace another in this way.

For example: People like to use the word gosh
Here is a link to show what words Christians know to be swear words.

I'm sure many of you will joke about this and laugh at us christians but the bible teaches us to not swear, and that is why we are bothered by swearing.

I, for one, am not offended with someone using swear words; I am, however, embarassed for the person who chooses to use them. It really does make them look unintelligent and without class. The English language is so rich and diverse, there are much wittier ways to express oneself. As Thomas Andy Dale said, Profainty is a feeble mind trying to express itself forcefully.

Decorum is important. Plus they're boring. Most people think they have some kind of shock value and that using them non-stop makes them 'edgy'. All it really does is expose them as being of limited creativity. When used properly swear words can add emphasis to a point. However most people just string a line of them together.

Yes, people get offended by swearing. I think it's mainly because people who swear a lot don't have the intelligence or creativity to express themselves individualisticlly. They are sheep.

Yes people are offended by swear words, it was often said that those people who do are out of control that come from a home that did not teach manners.
