Abstract would be not fitting a form. Like abrstract photography deals alot with closeups of odd testures and patterns.

Modern art is current day. I will show some examples below

first link is abstract almost modern with its form though

second is a perfect example of modern. I wish I had more to show you to get a true feel of modern. However I feel the images in image search doesn't show many true* modern art paintings.

Abstract art is contemporary painting that it doesn't define forms but emphasis the beauty of its own nature. Modern art is an art form that made of patterns or effects to create a unique form of subject.
The difference is abstract is pure with no forms, and modern art paintings were no longer in proposition but still in a form.

Abstract art is the modern art. Modern is a sense where art is now all in the perceptions of the viewer.

i think the definitions of "abstract art" and "modern art" are clear in the link another user provided...and the difference between them is actually quite easy: abstract art is talking more about the style and the way of presentation of the artwork whilst modern art refers to the art in a specific period, and it can include abstract art. :)

abstract art: A form of art in which there is no attempt to represent objects or persons, but which relies instead on lines, colours, and shapes alone for its aesthetic appeal.

modern art: a genre of the fine arts created from the mid-19th century which strayed from traditional techniques and styles
