No, dogs cant smell emotions. They can only sense our emotions.Fear, anger, frustration, depression, and pain are just some of the emotions that dogs sense. These emotions effect our pets almost the same way children are affected.

Instead of using the word 'smell' I can say they 'feel' our emotions. They observe us keenly and know our moods and emotions and respond accordingly. Like when you are feeling kinda down, they come near you and try to make you feel better by their love. Scientifically also, when we are emotional a distinct smell emits, which human nose may not be able to pick up but sure enough dogs can pick up that 'smell'.

I can't prove that they do - but I believe that it is true. We are complex creatures, and our endocrine systems are closely linked to emotional state. I certainly don't think it's beyond the realm of possiblity that a dog, with its keen sense of smell, can sense the changes our bodies undergo when our emotions fluctuate.

I don't think that they can "smell" them, but they sure can sense them. When I was going through some things, my dogs sure did know and they tried everything they could to make me feel better. They also know when I am stressed.

ya know, I used to think my dog had no clue to my moods. When I was down, he seemed more hyper. Now I realize that he is trying to draw me out and distract me... I realzied this recently after a MVA where I was injured. I was worried about him being all hyper while I was in pain and low and behold... he totally backed off. I now realize, looking back, he has always known my moods, he just doesn't sulk away, when I am in a bad one, so I didn't notice.
