Ambien can be both psychologically and physically addictive. You are demonstrating behaviors that physicians look at for addictive tendencies. Increasing the dosage yourself, becoming irritable without the drug, and withdrawal headache are symptoms of increased dependence. Have you tried Melatonin a natural sleep aid? Do you really need it to sleep or to escape? Addiction is a very scary road to take. You are better off telling your doctor about how you feel now, even if you do not want to. It would be awful to feel you have to have a pill especially to sleep. What are you going to do when you feel you need a pill to wake up, to get energy, to relax? I am glad you asked, these are warning signs. Perhaps there is a different drug you could try, but the Ambien appears to be a little too attractive to you. Look for alternative now, while you still can.

12.5 mg is the standard dosage for an adult patient, however Ambien is indicated for short term use and is a drug that patients can become dependant upon. The symptoms you describe sound like withdrawl since there was an abrupt discontinuance of drug use. Are you in peticular addicted?? That's something that really couldnt be diagnosed over the internet and should be a concern you express to your doctor or pharmacist.

You have become dependent on Ambien. It is a hypnotic meant for short-term management of insomnia usually from 7-10 days at a time, not for everyday use.
The maximum daily dose is 10mg, not 12.5. You increased your tolerance yourself and your doctor is now overdosing you. Please contact your doctor as soon as you're able and ask him/her to step you down and off the med. Do not stop the med abruptly. You must find safer, additional ways to encourage sleep between cycles of sleep aids.

What's the problem, exactly? People act like taking prescription drugs (or even being slightly dependent on them) is somehow a moral failure. Meanwhile, no one usually lectures people for having caffeine addictions or a particular food addiction or gasoline addictions (driving around their SUVs) or breeding addictions--why do people want multiple babies?? But I digress.
Who cares if taking Ambien helps you get to sleep. Our culture and country is f'ed up as it is--if you can find comfort in a good night's sleep, and Ambien is the solution, then KEEP THAT SCRIPT FILLED!

You need to stop taking it, that's why they tell you not to take it longer than 10 days, very habit forming, you need to wean yourself away from it. I don't understand why your doctor give you another prescription.

Sounds like it to me. Look, maybe you need to get a new mattress, or a pillow top mattress pad. It could be that you are not comfortable. Be careful with that stuff, if you continue to overdose, you may not wake up one morning.

Get into detox, right now. Go to AA meetings. Go to a mental facility. You need help.
